Environmental Considerations
The Tricon CX system has been tested for use in harsh environmental conditions up to Class G3 (Harsh)
environments as defined in ISA Standard S71.04-2013: Environmental Conditions for Process Measurement
and Control systems: Airborne Contaminants, based on mixed flowing gas exposure testing according to EIA
Standard 364-65, Class IIIA, against the environmental conditions described in the following table.
Feature Specification
Temperature 30° C ± 1° C
Cl2 20 ± 5 ppb
Notes • The synergistic effects of various combinations of corrosive gases make the determination of
severity levels complex.
• The effects of elevated temperature and high or variable relative humidity may cause the
acceleration of corrosion by gaseous contaminants and will impact the corrosion rates.
• The differing levels of exposure to harsh environmental conditions can reduce the equipment
Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
• The Tricon system is not designed for prolonged exposure to particulate corrosive elements such
as Sulphur. Under such conditions, provide suitable protection, such as purged air cabinets with
appropriate filtration systems, to ensure that the Tricon hardware is not exposed to particulate
based corrosive elements.
• The use of conformal coating does not stop the corrosive effects of harsh environmental
conditions.
• For equipment installations in harsh environmental conditions, Schneider Electric suggests that
customers obtain the guidance of an environmental chemical or biological specialist.
The following Tricon CX equipment has been tested for mixed flowing gas exposure.

• The module expects a constant load for DO outputs that are on. Varying loads may cause voter
diagnostics to fail, for example, fans. You should apply additional filtering if you drive such loads.
Alternatively, you can disable voter diagnostics for the module. If you disable voter diagnostics, you should
conduct additional safety analysis, which may require additional periodic proof testing.
• The module will periodically source a supervision current of 2 mA ±0.5 mA for 250 ms to allow diagnostics
to run on supervised DO outputs that are off.
• The DO Select Switch on the FET must be up for Digital Outputs and down for all other point types. Ensure
that the switches are in the correct positions before applying power to the system and after making any
configuration changes.

HART Communication
Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) is an open-standard master/slave protocol used for
communicating digital information between HART-enabled field devices and the Tricon controller. It transmits
both analog and digital data simultaneously, making it possible to transfer information such as device status,
diagnostics, and measured or calculated values.
HART technology increases plant availability and improves performance, reduces maintenance costs, and
helps improve regulatory compliance.
HART is supported on the following modules:
• Model 3723X AI + HART
• Model 3809X AO + HART
• Model 3902X UIO
• Model 4355X TCM
• Model 4610X UCM
The maximum number of HART field devices you can configure in a Tricon 11.3.x or later CX controller
depends on the I/O module you are using.
Maximum
Feature HART Points
This figure shows HART communication being passed from a PC running Triconex device type managers
(DTMs) and device-specific DTMs through a TCM or UCM, through an AI with HART, AO with HART, or UIO
module, to HART capable field devices.
Notes: • A Model 4355X TCM or 4610X UCM configured to support HART cannot report HART failures to
the Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor if a Model 4701X IMSS or a Model 4703X IMFF is not in the
IM-A slot.
• Schneider Electric recommends that you configure only one TCM or UCM to use HART. If you
configure more than one communication module to use the HART protocol, HART
communication speed will be reduced.

Installation and Maintenance
System Configuration
This section includes configuration information for a Tricon CX system, which includes a main chassis and
additional I/O expansion chassis, as required.
Configuration Specifications
This table includes specifications for determining the number and types of components that can be installed in
Tricon CX systems. Tricon CX systems house MPs and communication modules in the main chassis, and I/O
modules in a separate I/O expansion chassis.
Configuration Guidelines
Maximum I/O bus length 100 feet (30 meters) for RS-485 serial I/O bus.
Maximum IOP bus length 12.4 miles (20 km) (total from MP to last IMFF)
Communication Configuration
This table describes rules and guidelines for using communication modules in the Tricon CX system.
Communication Configuration
Component Description
Chassis At least one communication module (4355X TCM or 4610X UCM) must be included in the
main chassis, because these modules enable the TriStation PC to communicate with the
Tricon controller.
TCM Up to two logical slots can be configured for TCMs. Matched pairs of Model 4355X TCMs
can be installed in the left and right positions of the COM 1 and/or COM 2 slot in the Model
8120X Main Chassis.
UCM One logical slot can be configured for UCMs. Matched pairs of Model 4610X UCMs can be
installed in the left and right positions of the COM 1 or COM 2 slot in the Model 8120X Main
Chassis.
Note 1: Field Power will be dissipated on the DTA or ETP, with or without a hot-spare module.
Security Considerations
When using the Tricon CX in your environment, you should assess the security threats to your system within
the context of the overall plant architecture, any applicable standards, industry best practices, and your
corporate practices. This section contains guidelines for securing file backups, access to controllers, networks,
and project files.
Note: Schneider Electric highly recommends that you register with the Global Customer Support (GCS)
center to receive the latest information (by e-mail) about security vulnerabilities that may be found in
Triconex products. Also, if you discover a security vulnerability in a Triconex product, please
immediately contact the GCS center for assistance and further instructions.
Please see the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems for detailed guidelines in the
following areas:
• Workstation and File Security
• Controller Security
• Network Security
− Open Network
− Safety Peer-to-Peer Network
The following guidelines are in addition to those in the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11
Systems.
HART Security
• Use HART DTMs from reputable manufacturers.
• Allow only authorized users access to PCs that run HART DTMs.
• Use one or more of the following methods to block Tricon CX communication modules from passing
through writes from HART Universal Commands to HART-enabled field devices:
− Put the keyswitch on the main chassis in Run mode or Remote mode.
− Give HART-enabled field devices Read Only access in an access control list. For more information,
see “Controlling Access to the TCM or UCM” in the TriStation 1131 Developer’s Guide.
− Enable the HART Lock Configuration Change property for points connected to HART-enabled field
devices.
Note that some manufacturers of HART-enabled field devices support special commands that will not be
blocked by the methods above.
• To fully protect HART-enabled devices from accidental or malicious writes, use the physical, hardware
switch on your device to enable write protection. If your device does not have a switch or button to enable
write protection, contact the manufacturer to find out how to fully protect the device.
• Enable secure HART communication to use encryption and self-signed X.509 digital certificates for
communication with the Triconex Controller Device Type Manager (DTM) and the communication modules
in the controller. For more information, see "Secure Communication" in the TriStation 1131 Developer's
Guide.
• Enable Enhanced Security in your TriStation 1131 project file (.pt2).
• Monitor configuration changes and the health of field devices, using the Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor, by
configuring the following properties in HART-enabled tagnames.
− HART Monitor Configuration Change—allows the point to monitor HART configuration changes in the
field device
− HART Monitor Device Health—allows the point to monitor the health of the HART-enabled field device
Product Disposal
• At the end of the product’s use, follow your organization’s disposal instructions.
• Erase the control program from the controller by downloading any of the sample control programs from the
TriStation 1131 sample projects. This action will also erase x509 certificates, if used.
• Before disposing of PCs, delete TriStation 1131 project files. Consider using a data destruction program to
erase data from the hard drives.

Choosing Clearances
Schneider Electric recommends the following clearances:
• Minimum of 5.25 inches (13.3 centimeters) of space between the enclosure panels and sides of the
chassis
• Minimum of 3.75 inches (9.5 centimeters) of space between the front of each chassis and the enclosure
• Minimum of 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) of space between the bottom of the chassis and the bottom of the
enclosure
• Minimum of 3.5 inches (8.9 centimeters) of space between the top of each chassis and any obstructions to
airflow
When the ambient temperature of the enclosure is around 72° F (22° C), these clearances allow for adequate
convection cooling of all chassis and create an acceptable inlet air temperature (below 140° F, 60° C) into the
highest chassis in the enclosure.
Up to 40% of the volume created by these clearances may be consumed with non-heat-generating equipment
such as cables, structural components of the enclosure, and wiring panels, provided that each component
remains at least 1.75 inches (4.5 centimeters) away from the bottom and top of the chassis and does not block
airflow through the chassis.
If the clearances between the enclosure panels and chassis sides and front are reduced, the installation should
ensure that airflow is not restricted to any chassis and that the maximum allowable temperatures into and
through the chassis are not exceeded. The open space between the enclosure walls and the fronts and sides
of all the chassis minimizes the direct flow of heated air exhaust from the bottom chassis up through the higher
chassis.

The installation should ensure that forced airflow is through, and not around, the chassis. Directing airflow with
fans in an eight-chassis (four chassis in the front and four chassis in the rear) cabinet is particularly challenging
due to the column effect caused by the fans. This issue can be mitigated by using a plenum, as recommended
in the “Recommended Configurations for Managing Heat in 2000 mm x 800 mm x 800 mm Cabinets” table.
Using Sensors
Using temperature and fan airflow sensors ensures compliance with the chassis temperature requirements.
Sensors should be properly located at the top and bottom of each chassis to notify you if the enclosure fans or
facility air-conditioning fail. In the event of either failure occurring, the inlet air temperature to the chassis and
the temperature rise within the chassis may exceed the allowable maximum temperatures.
Model Description
This figure shows the location of the address plug on an I/O expansion chassis.
Model Description
4703X I/O Bus Interface Module Fiber-Fiber (IMFF); Single Mode (SM)
communication up to 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) or Multi-Mode
(MM) communication up to 1800 feet (550 meters)
The I/O bus cables are connected directly to the I/O bus interface modules.
The Model 4703X IMFF module can be used to convert single mode to multi-mode fiber communication, and
vice versa, using different types of small form-factor pluggables (SFPs).
CAUTION
POTENTIAL FOR EYE INJURY
• Use only Class 1 Laser SFPS.
When using the daisy chain network topology, the In Link connectors (on the I/O Bus interface modules) are
connected to the MP network (on the main chassis) or to the Out Link connectors (on the I/O Bus interface
modules) of the previous I/O chassis, and the Out Link connectors are connected to the next I/O chassis in the
daisy chain.
When using the star network topology, network switches are required for point-to-point cable connection to the
In Link connectors on the I/O bus interface modules.
For I/O bus security and safety, follow these guidelines:
• Use three independent, closed (no foreign network nodes) physical networks for the leg A, leg B, and leg C
I/O buses.
• If you use any interposing switches, turn off unused ports.
• Turn off unused Out ports on Model 4703X IMFFs, using TriStation 1131.
Key Plates for I/O Modules and Key Bases for I/O Cables
In the Model 8131X I/O Expansion Chassis, Field External Termination (FET) connectors are required for
installing I/O modules and for connecting interface cables from ETPs. Each FET connector contains a key
plate and a key base.
Legend
A Key plate
B Key base
The key plate is next to the module socket and is uniquely slotted to allow installation of only compatible I/O
modules. All modules of a particular type are identically keyed to match the key plate on compatible FETs.
The key base is installed around the I/O cable connector and is uniquely slotted to allow connection of only
compatible cables. All cables of a particular type are identically keyed to match the key base on compatible
FETs.
If you try to install a module in an incorrect slot, the module will not slide all the way into the chassis. Do not
apply force to overcome the obstruction. The obstruction could be the key plate on an incompatible FET.
Always follow the complete module installation procedure.
For information on FET and I/O module compatibility, see Determining Field Termination Options by Module
Model Number.
Installing Modules
This procedure explains how to install a module. It contains steps to ensure the correct module gets installed.
Do not skip any of the steps because doing so increases the risk of an incorrect module being installed into the
system.
NOTICE
• Do not install more than one module at the same time. You must push the first module in and wait until
the Active indicator goes on, then install the next module.
• If you feel an obstruction while pushing a module into a slot, do not apply force to overcome the
obstruction. The obstruction could be the key plate on an incompatible FET. Key plates ensure that
modules are installed only in slots with compatible FETs. Installing the wrong type of module into a
running system can cause permanent damage and possibly a spurious trip of the application.
If you are using the SFP-based IOP bus, insert the SFP into the port on the MP, and then insert the cable into
the SFP before you insert the MP into the chassis. Insert the SFP into the socket until you feel the SFP
connector snap into place. Do not apply excessive force when inserting an SFP or fiber cable.
Before you install each module, ensure that:
• Power is available.
• Field wiring and external termination panels (ETPs) are properly connected (if applicable).
• The module to be inserted has the correct firmware version, as defined in the Tricon Product Release
Notice for your version of the system.
1. Ensure that the correct FET—one that is compatible with the I/O module—is installed in the slot (if
applicable).
2. Ensure there are no bent pins on the connector of the module to be inserted.
3. If you are installing a redundant module and the other module of the pair is already inserted, ensure that
the model number of the module and the color-code stripe are identical to the already-inserted module.
4. Insert the module into the slot and push it until it is firmly seated. Tighten the retractable fasteners of the
module to 10 inch-pounds.
Controller Grounding
This section explains how to properly ground a Tricon CX controller, which is essential to the safety of plant
personnel as well as to the proper operation and protection of the controller.
Please see the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems for detailed guidelines in the
following areas:
• Introduction to Grounding
• Achieving a Zero-Voltage Ground Reference
• Connecting to a Grid
Note: Optionally, you can connect the Tricon CX chassis to safety ground using the third terminal on the
power supply inputs.
This figure shows how to connect a Model 8120X Main Chassis to safety ground.

CAUTION
The Tricon CX controller can be repaired while operating. However, the integrity of the controller depends
on the operator correctly following repair procedures. If in doubt about the procedures, the operator should
take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of the plant and personnel, then call Schneider
Electric for assistance in implementing the repair procedures.
CAUTION
The following procedure should be performed only while the process under control is in an off-line or
shutdown status.
2. Turn off one of the power sources and leave it off for several minutes.
3. After restoring power, repeat the test for the other power source.
4. Turn on both power sources prior to restarting the controlled process.

Field Termination Specifications
This section identifies and describes field termination options compatible with Tricon CX I/O modules. You can
use external termination panels (ETPs) with the Model 8131X I/O Expansion Chassis.
The base model numbers of ETPs are followed by an asterisk (*) in this document. The asterisk is a
placeholder for “F” or “RF,” which relates to RoHS compliance and flame-test rating. For more information, see
the Part Number Cross Reference section.
Note: Although the standard length of all interface cables is 10 feet (3 meters), you may order any length
cable up to 90 feet (27.4 meters) in 10-foot increments by using the last two digits of the termination
panel’s model number to specify length in feet. For example, specify 9xxxX-x50F if you want a 50-
foot (15 meter) cable instead of the standard 10-foot (3-meter) cable.
For more information about interface cables, see the Field Terminations Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems.

Appendix A
Nonincendive Circuit Parameters
This appendix describes the parameters you should use for nonincendive communication circuits in the field.
Parameters that apply to the various Tricon CX controller communication modules are shown in the figures in
this appendix, which are extracted from Triconex Drawing 9110003-002.
Note 1: FMRC-approved apparatus. The voltage (Vmax) and current (Imax) which the load device can
receive must be equal to or greater than the maximum open circuit voltage (Voc) and maximum
short circuit current (Isc) which can be delivered by the source device. In addition, the maximum
capacitance (Ci) and inductance (Li) of the load which is not prevented by circuit components from
providing a stored energy charge to the field wiring (for example, a diode across a winding to clamp
an inductive discharge) and the capacitance and inductance of the interconnecting wiring, must be
equal to or less than the capacitance (Ca) or inductance (La) that can be driven by the source
device.
Note: For more information on signal data, see the user’s guide from the applicable manufacturer.
