CHEE 220 Assignment 5 Solutions

The assignment focuses on calculations involving the benzene and toluene system using Raoult's law and the Antoine equation to evaluate saturation pressures. It includes tasks to determine mole fractions and pressures at specified temperatures and compositions. Additionally, it requires analyzing systems with varying compositions of acetonitrile and nitromethane at different temperatures and pressures.

CHEE 220 Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics

Assignment 5

1. Assuming the validity of Raoult's law, do the following calculations for the benzene (1) and
toluene (2) system. Use the Antoine equation to evaluate Psat for the different components. You will find
the necessary constants in Table B.2 of the textbook.

a) Given y1 = 0.33 and T = 100°C, find x1 and P.

b) Given T = 105°C and P = 120 kPa, find x1 and y1. If the overall mole fraction of benzene is z1 =
0.33 what molar fraction of the two-phase system is vapour?
2. Using figure 10.12 in your textbook, specify the mole fractions of all phases and all components
(Vn, Ln, x1, y1, x2, y2) for:

a) A system with a feed of 28% acetonitrile and 72% nitromethane at 62°C and 70 kPa.
b) A system with a feed of 46 % acetonitrile and 54% nitromethane at 91°C and 70 kPa.
c) A system with a feed of 60% acetonitrile and 40% nitromethane at 78°C and 70 kPa.
