About CMRG

 Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has made announcement in the Vice-Chancellor’s
Conference held on 30.08.2022 for improving Translational Research in the State of Tamil Nadu.
 Chief Minister`s Research Grant (CMRG) was established on 27.01.2023.
 Higher Education (J1) Department G.O.(Ms).No.15, Dt.27.01.2023 sanction of Rs. 50 Crore
recurring grant for funding Research Projects to researchers in the State Government Higher
Educational Institutions (Arts & Science, Education, Engineering, Polytechnic Colleges) & State
Government Universities (under the aegis of Higher Education Department) in Tamil Nadu.
 The Directorate of Technical Education (DoTE) is the nodal agency for CMRG.
 CMRG unit has been functioning in the DoTE Campus (53, Sardar Patel Road, Guindy, Chennai).

About CMRG project scheme

 The mission of CMRG is Global Dynamics for Responsible Research.


 Responsible Research is to identify / address the societal needs & conduct Translational Research.
 Translational Research is to bring the Research Outcome (Process or Product Development /
Patent / Industrial application / Technology Transfer / Commercialization etc) that would result in
to improvement in Socio-Economic priorities in the State of Tamil Nadu; and to improve the life to
Global Standards.
 Project Grant: Rs. 20 lakhs for student led project; Rs. 40 lakhs for faculty led project.
 Project Duration: 3 years (Max.).
 Project Funds to operate / monitor through Tamil Nadu Public Fund Tracking System (TNPFTS).
 Research project proposals are being invited during the month of April every year.

CMRG Research Title / Subject

Tamil Nadu Industrial Policy promotes (i) Focus Sectors, (ii) Sunrise Sectors, (iii) Startups, (iv)
World Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CMRG integrates the policy with the Mission.
Research proposal Title / Subject shall be in line with any one or more of the following sector-
specific priorities to improve the Economic Growth & Development in the State of Tamil Nadu;
 Focus Sector: Automobiles & Auto components, Chemicals, Electronic Hardware, Financial
Services, Heavy Engineering, Leather, Software, Textiles.
 Sunrise Sector: Aerospace & Defense Applications, Agro & Food processing, Biotechnology,
Electric Vehicles, EV cell & Battery Manufacturing, Electronics System Design & Manufacturing,
Footwear & finished Leather Goods, Polyurethane fabric, Green (Hydrogen) Fuel Technology,
Medical Electronic Devices & Equipment, Petrochemicals & Speciality Chemicals,

Pharmaceuticals, Bulk Drugs & Nutraceuticals, Renewable Energy Components Manufacturing,
Technical Textiles (including Medical Textiles).

CMRG Project - Process flow

1) Notification from CMRG inviting project proposals (in the month of April every year).
2) Online submission of project proposals (Concept Note) by the Researchers on or before the due date.
3) Initial Scrutiny (eligibility check, Sector-Specific segregation) of Concept Notes by the CMRG unit.
4) Responsible Research & expected Translational Outcome assessment by the Authorities.
5) Submission of Full Project Proposal by the select PIs.
6) Evaluation (Level-1): Scrutiny of Project Proposals by the Subject Experts.
7) Evaluation (Level-2): Screening of Project Proposals by the Screening Committee (with virtual mode PPT
presentation & Interaction by the PIs).
8) Evaluation (Level-3): Evaluation & Approval of proposals by the Peer Review Panel Evaluation
Committee (PRPEC).
9) Project approval intimation to successful PIs (sanction order date is the project start date).
10) Submission of acceptance and Letter of Undertaking by the PIs.
11) Project fund transfer to PI`s HEI (University / College) and monitor through TNPFTS.
12) Implementation of Project by the PIs.
13) Submission of Progress Report to CMRG by the PIs (every 6 months from the project start date).
14) Mid-term Review of the projects sanctioned
15) Submission of Project Completion Report (with Translational Outcomes and Audited Utilization
Certificate by the PIs.
16) Success Stories.
17) Project Closeout.
