Musical Instruments”

But before we dive in to our discussion

let’s identify our learning objectives
today

(The teacher will present the learning

objectives.)

Are we going to achieve these

learning objectives at the end of the
lesson? “Yes, we will, teacher!”

That’s great!

Now, what is a musical instrument?

A musical instrument is a device

created or adapted to make musical
sounds. In principle, any object that
produces sound can be considered a
musical instrument. A person who
plays a musical instrument is known
as an instrumentalist.

Musicians use different instrument that

add color to a music. Each instrument
has its own character that you can
distinguish from the other. The sounds
of each instrument depend on its
timbre, the tone quality or color of a
sound that makes it unique from other
sounds. It is also called tone color.

There are different groups of

instruments:

• Woodwind
• Brass
• Strings
• Percussion
• Keyboard

Woodwind

Woodwind instruments produce

sounds when air passes a tube
through a mouthpiece. They are
usually made of wood or metal and
have holes that are closed or opened
to create pitches.

Examples:
Clarinet

Saxophone

Brass

Brass instruments are large tubes

made of brass. Sometimes, they are
also made of other metals. These are
played by blowing air into it through
the round mouthpiece. The vibrations
of the lips make the air inside the tube
vibrate. Pitches are created by
increasing the force of air or
lengthening.

Examples:

Trumpet

French Horn

Strings

String instruments used tight strings

and a body shape that amplifies the
sound. Music is created when the
strings are drawn over by a bow or are
plucked. A bow is a wooden stick with
stretched horsehair.

Examples:

Guitar
Violin

I have here another example of a

string instrument.
“Yes, teacher! It is a ukulele!”
Are you familiar with this one?

Yes, very good it is a ukulele. Have “Yes, teacher!”

tried playing a ukulele?

Wow, all of you already experienced

playing a ukulele.

Percussion

Percussion instruments are a wide

range of instruments that are hit,
struck or shaken. They can either be
untuned, those that are not pitched
are the used to create rhythms; or
tuned, those that have pitches.

Examples:

Cymbals

Drum

Keyboard

Keyboard instrument, any musical

instrument on which different notes
can be sounded by pressing a series
of keys, push buttons, or parallel
levers.

Examples:
Piano

Harpsichord

Those are the different groups of

instruments. The woodwind, brass,
strings, percussion and keyboard
instruments. Musical instruments can
be use as hobbies, career, and many
more. You can try those instruments if
you want to.
“Yes, teacher!”
Do you understand our lesson today,
class?
“None so far, teacher.”
Do you have any questions or
clarifications? “We are sure, teacher.”

None so far? Are you sure?

All right! Since you don’t have any

questions, let me ask you.

What are the five groups of

instruments?

Among the five groups of instruments,

what is the most interesting for you? (The pupils will answer the questions
based on their understanding.)
What particular instrument you tried
playing?

How was the experience? Did you

enjoy it?

If you were given the chance to play

another musical instrument, what
would it be and why?

Very good, class!

I can see that all of you understand

our topic today. I hope that you will
have the desire to play instruments in
the future.
