Gas Leakage Detection System

Inside Automobiles Using IoT

PRESENTED BY,
ALEN SHAJU(S5 ECE)
ABIN SABU(S5 ECE)
Why Gas Leakage Detection is Important
Carbon monoxide (CO) gas leakage inside an automobile is critical for the following
reason

• 1. Toxicity: Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and poisonous gas that

can be lethal when inhaled, as it prevents oxygen from being carried by the
blood.
• 2. Health Risks: Prolonged exposure can cause headaches, dizziness,
unconsciousness, and even death.
• 3. Silent Killer: Due to its undetectable nature (no smell or taste), it can
accumulate unnoticed inside the vehicle, posing a serious threat to passengers.
• 4. Faulty Systems: Leaks typically result from faulty exhaust systems, which need
immediate attention to prevent exposure.
• Proper maintenance and regular inspections are crucial to avoid CO poisoning.
Problem Statement
Automobiles often face the risk of gas leakage, which can result in
potentially hazardous situations, including fires, explosions, and health
risks due to toxic gas inhalation. Traditional gas detection systems are
either unavailable or inefficient in providing real-time alerts and
ensuring driver safety.
Proposed Solution
To address this issue, there is a need for a robust, real-time gas leakage
detection system inside automobiles. Leveraging IoT technology, such a
system should continuously monitor the environment within the
vehicle, detect any abnormal gas concentration levels, and immediately
alert the driver and concerned authorities. This system should provide
instant notifications through smartphone alerts or vehicle display
systems to allow preventive actions, ensuring passenger safety,
avoiding vehicle damage, and reducing environmental risks.
System Architecture
Working Principle
• The MQ-7 sensor detects carbon monoxide (CO) levels in the air by using a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor
layer that changes its resistance when exposed to CO gas. The sensor has two heating cycles: one for
detecting CO and one for resetting. The sensor outputs a variable analog signal corresponding to the
concentration of CO in parts per million (PPM).
• The Arduino processes this signal to calculate the CO concentration in PPM. It then compares the PPM value
with a predefined threshold.
• GSM module is attached to Arduino Uno and it needs to be powered on with a 5 V external power supply. It
is controlled using AT commands.
• the Arduino will turn off the actuator automatically when the level of carbon monoxide exceeds 24 PPM.
• The Android app will read data from ThingSpeak Status Channel approximately every 1 min via the
smartphone internet connection and display them on the screen so that the user can monitor the data
remotely.
• The system can send alert notification to the user using an Android app for a dangerous level of carbon
monoxide. The system able to send text messages to the emergency contact and the user if the level of
carbon monoxide is dangerous and the user does not turn off the vehicle in each time. The system can be
installed in the vehicle to control the ignition system for turning off the engine.
Advantages of IoT-Based Detection
• If the CO levels rise above a dangerous threshold, the system automatically
turns off the vehicle, preventing poisoning or further exposure if then user
didn’t respond to the notification in the app in few minutes.
• With ThingSpeak, data from the MQ-7 sensor is uploaded in real-time to
the cloud, allowing users to remotely monitor CO levels on their Android
app.
• The use of an Android app provides an intuitive and accessible interface
for users to monitor and respond to CO levels.
• By shutting down the vehicle when CO levels are high, it prevents the
release of excessive pollutants, contributing to better environmental
health.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the IoT-based carbon monoxide monitoring system using
the MQ-7 gas sensor interfaced with Arduino effectively detects
dangerous CO levels in vehicles. The system automatically shuts off the
vehicle when CO concentrations exceed a critical threshold, ensuring
safety. Real-time data is transmitted to an Android app via the
ThingSpeak platform, allowing for continuous monitoring and alerts.
This integration of IoT enhances vehicle safety by providing automated
responses and remote monitoring capabilities, offering a proactive
approach to managing carbon monoxide exposure risks.
