Homework 04 ECE437 2024

The document outlines a homework assignment consisting of multiple problems related to Z-transforms and LTI systems. It includes tasks such as finding Z-transforms, regions of convergence, system functions, and impulse responses for various signals and difference equations. The problems require the application of Z-transform properties and methods such as partial fraction expansion.

HOMEWORK #4 (Submit solutions through blackboard in PDF format)

Problem 1

Find Z-transforms and corresponding regions of convergence for the following signals:

a) 𝑥(𝑛) = {2, 2 , 0, −1, −1}

b) 𝑥(𝑛) = 𝑢(𝑛 − 1)
c) 𝑥(𝑛) = − (3) 𝑢(−𝑛 − 1)
d) 𝑦(𝑛) = e 𝑢(𝑛)
e) 𝑦(𝑛) = 𝑏 sin(𝜔 𝑛) 𝑢(𝑛) (Hint: use the Euler representation and/or properties of Z-trfrm)
f) 𝑥(𝑛) = (𝑛 − 2𝑛 + 1) 𝑢(𝑛 − 1) (Hint: use properties of Z-transform)

g) Determine A(z), ROC. What is the relationship between p and q to produce a valid ROC?

𝑝 , 𝑛>0
𝑎(𝑛) = 1, 𝑛= 0
𝑞 , 𝑛<0

2 , 𝑛≥0
h) 𝑤(𝑛) =
1, −5< 𝑛<0

Problem 2

Given is the LCC difference equation that represents some LTI system (assume zero-initial-conditions):

𝑦(𝑛) + 9 𝑦(𝑛 − 2) = 𝑥(𝑛)

a) Find the system function H(z) of this system and sketch the pole-zero plot
b) What is Y(z) when 𝑥(𝑛) = 𝑢(𝑛)
Hint: No need to solve the equation, just work in Z domain and write the Y(z)
c) Find the impulse response of the system by finding the inverse of H(z) (partial fraction exp)

Problem 3

Given is the LCC difference equation that represents some LTI system (assume zero-initial-conditions):

𝑦(𝑛) − 𝑦(𝑛 − 1) − 2𝑦(𝑛 − 2) = 𝑥(𝑛) − 𝑥(𝑛 − 1)

a) Find the system function H(z) of this system and sketch the pole-zero plot
b) What is Y(z) when 𝑥(𝑛) = 𝛿(𝑛 − 2) + 2 𝑢(𝑛 − 3)
c) if 𝑥(𝑛) = 𝑢(𝑛), find the output y(n) with the help of H(z), and by inverting the Y(z) (partial
fraction exp)

Problem 4

Given the Z-transform

𝑋(𝑧) =

a) What are the 3 possible regions of convergence for this X(z)?

b) What are the poles and zeros of X(z)? Sketch the pole-zero plot
c) Assuming causal ROC in part a), invert X(z) using the method of partial-fraction expansion

Problem 5

Assume a system function of an LTI system is

5𝑧
𝐻(𝑧) =
𝑧−2

The input to the system 𝑥(𝑛) = 3 𝑢(𝑛). Assuming y(n) and Y(z) are the Z-transform pair, and y(n) is the
output of the above system:

a) assuming ROC of H(z) is: |z|>2, determine Y(z) and ROC of Y(z).
b) Determine y(n) by inverting Y(z) using the method of partial-fraction-expansion for the same
ROC as in part a)
