Objectives
The aim of this lab is to configure a DHCP server and assign IP addresses to devices in a network with
12 users, including desktop computers, mobile devices, and IP phones. The lab will also involve
verifying the IP information of the DHCP clients, testing connectivity using Ping commands, and
exploring PDUs and simulation scenarios to understand the process of DHCP configuration and IP
address assignment.

Requirements:
• Physical or virtual environment with network devices (e.g., routers, switches) and
workstations (e.g., desktop computers, mobile devices, IP phones) for 12 users.
• Cisco Packet Tracer or similar network simulation software.
• Basic knowledge of IP addressing, DHCP concepts, and network configuration.

Task 1:
➢ Create a Server-Client Infrastructure
• Set up a network topology in Cisco Packet Tracer with network devices (e.g., routers,
switches) and workstations (e.g., desktop computers, mobile devices, IP phones) for 12
users.
• Connect three of the users via network devices (e.g., switches) to the server, which
will act as the DHCP server. Connect the remaining users via workstations (e.g.,
desktop computers, mobile devices, IP phones) to the network devices.
• Verify the physical connectivity and configuration of network devices and
workstations.

Task 2: Configure DHCP Server

• Configure the DHCP server with an IP address and subnet mask.
School of Computer Science Engineering and Technology

• Define an IP address pool (e.g., 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.254) to be assigned to the

DHCP clients.
• Verify the DHCP server configuration and ensure that it is enabled.
• Configure the DHCP clients (e.g., desktop computers, mobile devices, IP phones)
to obtain IP addresses automatically from the DHCP server.
• Verify the IP information of the DHCP clients using the "ipconfig" command or
similar commands on the workstations.

Task 3: Verify Connectivity with Ping and Traceroute

• Use the "ping" command to verify the connectivity between the DHCP clients (e.g.,
desktop computers, mobile devices, IP phones) and the DHCP server.
• Use the "traceroute" command to trace the path of packets between the DHCP clients
and the DHCP server.

Task 4: Understand and Explore PDUs and Simulation Scenarios

• Use the Packet Tracer simulator to explore the different types of Protocol Data Units
(PDUs) used in DHCP, such as DHCPDISCOVER, DHCPOFFER, DHCPREQUEST,
and DHCPACK.
• Create simulation scenarios to observe the process of IP address assignment and
renewal, and the exchange of PDUs between DHCP clients and the DHCP server.
• Analyse the PDUs exchanged and observe the impact of changes in IP
addresses and network topology on DHCP operation.
• Discuss the advantages of using DHCP in a network with many devices and the
benefits of automating IP address assignment and management.

Submission Guidelines:
a) The assignment must be verified by the instructor during the lab (Submission on LMS will only
be considered once the working topology on Packet Tracer is verified). Submit the .cpt file along
with the details in word/pdf in zipped format on LMS within 2 days.
b) Zipped file must be saved as per the format RollNo_Lab# (Example: E24CSE632_Lab1).
c) Write name and enrolment number inside the assignment file. Without it, your submission won’t
be considered for evaluation.
d) Provide labels for IP addresses, cabling and devices.
e) Submit the assignment in your respective batch’s submission link in LMS. Submission in other
batch’s submission portal will not be checked.
f) Late submission will lead to penalty.
g) Plagiarism will lead to negative grading.
