Assignment No. 5 Elementary Differential Applications

This document is an assignment for Math 104 Differential Equations at Pangasinan State University, focusing on applications of differential equations. It includes problem-solving instructions and presents six specific problems related to physics, chemistry, and thermodynamics that require the application of differential equations to find unknown quantities. Students are instructed to perform calculations with four decimal places and to visualize the problems through diagrams if necessary.

MATH 104 DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

ASSIGNMENT NO. 5: APPLICATIONS OF DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTION:

 Read the problem carefully and develop a mental picture of the physical
situation. If necessary, sketch a simple diagram of the physical
situation to help you visualize it.
 Identify the known and unknown quantities in an organized manner. Equate
given values to the symbols used to represent the corresponding
quantity.
 Use formulas and conceptual reasoning to plot a strategy for solving for
the unknown quantity.
 Identify the appropriate formula(s) to use.
 Perform substitutions and algebraic manipulations to solve for the
unknown quantity.
 Copy the problem and answer.
 Use four decimal places in your computation.

PROBLEM-SOLVING
1. The approximate radius of the earth is 6,370km and g, the
acceleration due to gravity is 9.80m/s2 or 9.80x10-3 km/sec2.
Determine the velocity of escape of an object projected from the
earths surface, that is, the minimum velocity imparted to its so that
it will never return.
2. A tank contains 400 liters of fresh water. Brine containing
0.3kg/liter of salt runs into the tank at the rate of 5
liters/minute. The mixture, kept uniform by stirring, runs out at 10
liters/minute. Find the maximum amount of salt in the tank and the
time required to reach the maximum.
3. Two chemical substances, of initial quantities a and b, combine to
produce a compound. At the end of time t, an equal amount x of each
substance has changed. From the basic law of chemical reactions it is
known that the rate of change is proportional to the quantities of
the substances remaining, that is,
𝑑𝑥
= 𝑘(𝑎 − 𝑥)(𝑏 − 𝑥), 𝑎 ≠ 𝑏
𝑑𝑡
If x=0, when t=0, find x at any time t.
4. At 12:00 noon a thermometer reading 60°C is taken outside where the
air temperature is 24°C. At 12:02 P.M. the reading is 32°C. At 12:06
P.M. the thermometer is taken back indoors where the temperature is
60°C. What is the thermometer reading at 12:00 noon to 12:06 P.M.?
5. A thermometer reading 10°C is brought into a room where the
temperature is 32°C.
6. In the following problems, find the equations of the orthogonal
trajectories of the given family of curves.
a. The circles x2+y2=cx
b. The ellipses 2x2+y2=c.
c. The hyperbolas xy=c
