Assignment II: Theoretical Concepts in Windows Server Administration

Assume you are a consultant for Bule Hora University. The university is planning to
upgrade its IT infrastructure and has asked you to provide a detailed report on various aspects
of Windows Server Administration.

Network Design and Planning:

Task1: Explain the importance of network segmentation and how it can improve security
and performance in a Windows Server environment.

Scenario 1.1: assume BHU has experienced several security breaches due to a lack of
network segmentation. Describe how implementing network segmentation could have
prevented these breaches and improved overall network performance.

Task 2: Describe the process of subnetting and how it is used to allocate IP addresses
efficiently within a network.

Scenario 2.1: The university is expanding and needs to allocate IP addresses to new
departments. Explain how subnetting can help manage IP addresses efficiently as the
company grows.

Active Directory Fundamentals:

Task 3: Discuss the role of Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) in a Windows Server
environment. Include an explanation of domains, trees, and forests.

Scenario 3.1: BHU is merging with another company that has its own Active Directory
domain. Explain how AD DS can be used to integrate the two companies’ IT infrastructures.

Task 4: Explain the concept of Organizational Units (OUs) and how they are used to manage
users and resources in Active Directory.

Scenario 4.1: The IT department needs to delegate administrative tasks to different teams
without giving them full control over the entire domain. Describe how OUs can be used to
achieve this.

Group Policy Management:

Task 5: Describe the purpose of Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and how they can be used to
enforce security policies across a network.
Scenario 5.1: BHU wants to enforce a company-wide policy that locks user accounts after
three failed login attempts. Explain how GPOs can be used to implement this policy.

Task 6: Explain the process of creating and applying GPOs to different OUs within a
domain.

Scenario 6.1: The university needs to apply different security settings to the Administration
and Development departments. Describe how GPOs can be created and applied to achieve
this.

File and Print Services:

Task 7: Discuss the benefits of using a centralized file server in a Windows Server
environment. Include an explanation of file permissions and access control.

Scenario 7.1: Employees are currently storing files on their local machines, leading to data
loss and security issues. Explain how a centralized file server can address these problems.

Task 8: Explain the process of setting up and managing network printers using Windows
Server.

Scenario 8.1: The university has multiple departments that need access to different printers.
Describe how network printers can be set up and managed to meet this need.

Backup and Recovery:

Task 9: Describe the importance of regular backups in a Windows Server environment.

Include an overview of different backup types (full, incremental, differential) and their use
cases.

Scenario 9.1: BHU has recently lost critical data due to a server failure. Explain how regular
backups could have mitigated the impact of this failure.

Task 10: Explain the steps involved in restoring an Active Directory database from a backup
in the event of a disaster.

Scenario 10.1: A ransomware attack has corrupted the Active Directory database. Describe
the steps to restore the database from a backup. Discuss how you protect the university
network assets from ransomware attack?

Monitoring and Maintenance:

Task 11: Discuss the importance of monitoring server performance and health. Include an
explanation of key performance indicators (KPIs) and the tools available in Windows Server
for monitoring.

Scenario 11.1: The university’s servers have been experiencing performance issues. Explain
how monitoring KPIs can help identify and resolve these issues.

Task 12: Describe a maintenance plan for a Windows Server environment, including regular
updates, patches, and system health checks.

Scenario 12.1: BHU wants to ensure their servers are always up-to-date and secure. Outline a
maintenance plan that includes regular updates and health checks.

You are expected to provide a detailed report covering each task, with explanations,
scenarios, and theoretical insights.

 Diagrams or charts where applicable to illustrate concepts.

 Probably final exam will include these concepts

Evaluation Criteria:

 Clarity and depth of explanations.

 Relevance and creativity of the scenarios.
 Accuracy of the theoretical concepts.
 Use of diagrams or charts to enhance understanding.
 Overall coherence and organization of the report.
