CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter consists of the overview of the study, its difficulty, objective,

scope and limitation and the significance of the study. This chapter also aims to point

out the main result of the research.

Introduction

This study explores how academics affect the mental health of senior

high school students in PWU CDCEC BATAAN. There are so many reasons

and factors why students face different problems, including academic

problems. Academics are one of the factors; they have a significant role in

shaping students overall well-being, particularly if they're struggling

academically, overloaded with schoolwork, have high expectations, or have

low grades and other extracurricular activities. When students experience

academic struggles, such as low grades or an excessive workload, they may

feel stress and pressure that can lead to anxiety and depression. Furthermore,

academic success can be a source of strength for students in terms of

academics;

it can help them to boost their self-confidence and to know the strategies that

are compatible with their studies.

Philippine Women’s University CDCEC Bataan

This study aims to better understand how academics affect the

mental health of senior high school students in PWU CDCEC BATAAN. By

identifying these effects, educators, administrators, and policymakers can

implement strategies to create a more supportive academic environment that

promotes both academic success and healthy mental well-being. The

significance of this research is to provide information that can be an opportunity

for educators, school administrators, and even the students to have an idea of

what strategies they'll use to succeed without sacrificing their mental health.

Background of the study

Senior high school students often experience academic struggles

due to heavy workloads, high expectations, and the need to prepare for their

higher education and future careers for personal growth. At PWU CDCEC

BATAAN, students may face additional problems, such as balancing academic

demands, extracurricular activities, personal responsibilities, and social

pressures. Exposure to academic stress can have a negative impact on

students' mental health, leading to anxiety, stress, depression, burnout, and

poor academic performance.

Previous studies, such as those by Kashif et al. (2024), revealed that

academic stress is a significant predictor of mental health issues, indicating a

Philippine Women’s University CDCEC Bataan

direct impact on students' psychological well-being. Similarly, Xiuhan Li (2025)

points out that university students often face the challenge of balancing

multiple tasks and making complex decisions about priorities, which can cause

pressure and some mental health issues. These findings explain that many of

the students are experiencing academic pressure and stress that is causing

uncertainty about their future that can lead to self-doubt and mental health

problems.

This study is important to investigate because understanding

students well-being can improve their academic performance that can lead to

creating tactics that help students preserve their mental health and foster a

healthy learning environment that can help them to achieve academic success

that can boost their self-esteem and motivate them for higher education.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to examine how academic affect the mental health of senior

high school students at PWU CDCEC BATAAN. Under this are the questions

that the researcher aims to answer:

Philippine Women’s University CDCEC Bataan

1. What are the common stressors related to academics that contribute to

anxiety, depression, or other mental health concerns among senior high school

students?

2. How do students cope with academic stress, and what support systems are

available to help them manage their mental health?

3. Are there significant differences in mental health outcomes among senior

high school students across different academic tracks (e.g., STEM, ABM,

HUMSS) in PWU CDCEC Bataan?

4. What are the common academic challenges faced by senior high school

students at PWU CDCEC Bataan?

5. What steps can schools take to help students manage their academic

responsibilities while protecting their mental health?

Significance of the Study

The result of the study will be of great benefit to the following:

Philippine Women’s University CDCEC Bataan

Senior high school students, our study can help students to better recognize the

academic factors affecting their mental health, and by identifying these factors,

students can develop or improve their self-awareness and coping strategies.

Additionally, our study may contribute to the enhancement of school policies and can

develop healthier coping strategies and seek appropriate results when needed.

Teachers, our study will offer insights into how academic demands contribute to

students stress, allowing educators to adjust their teaching methods,

workloads, and expectations. This can help create a more supportive learning

environment that fosters both academic success and emotional well-being.

School Administration, our study will provide valuable findings that can help

school administrators develop or improve policies and programs that promote

student mental well-being. By doing so, the school can foster a more balanced

and supportive academic environment.

Parents, have benefits to our study because they'll gain a better understanding

of the struggles their children are facing in school. This can help them to

provide emotional and academic support.

For future researchers, our study can serve as a reference for future research

about the connection of academics and the students mental health.

Scope and Limitation

The main objective of this research is to know how academic affects

the mental health of senior high school students at PWU CDCEC BATAAN. It

explores how academic demands can lead to emotional changes, that can

result mental health problems such as, anxiety, depression, and burnout.

However, it is also examines the positive effect of academic on the emotional

and mental well-being of the student.

The study focuses on identifying the causes and factors contributing

to students mental health struggles and successes. However, its scope is

limited to senior high school students in PWU CDCEC BATAAN. It does not

extend to other students from other schools, or other academic levels.
