Winter 2025 MATH 201 Assignment 10 Due 11PM Wednesday 9 Apr

1. (10 points) Solve the heat flow problem

∂u ∂2u
= 2 2, t > 0, 0 < x < 1,
∂t ∂x
∂u
(0, t) = 0, t > 0,
∂x
∂u
(1, t) = 0, t > 0,
∂x
u(x, 0) = 1 − 2 cos(πx) + 2 cos(3πx), 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.

Compute limt→∞ u(x, t) and check that it equals the average value of u(x, 0).
[In this problem and the following ones, it is not necessary to repeat the separation of variables:
you may use the appropriate formal solution of the PDE and boundary conditions found in
notes and lectures.]

2. (10 points) Solve the heat flow problem

∂u ∂2u
= 3 2, t > 0, 0 < x < 1,
∂t ∂x
u(0, t) = 1, t > 0,
u(1, t) = 0, t > 0,
u(x, 0) = x, 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.

Then find limt→∞ u(x, t).

3. Complete the following steps to find the solution of the nonhomogeneous heat conduction
problem

ut = uxx + g(x), 0 < x < π, t > 0,

u(0, t) = 0, t > 0,
u(π, t) = 0, t > 0,
u(x, 0) = f (x), 0 ≤ x ≤ π.

(a) (3 points) Write u(x, t) = w(x, t) + v(x) where w and all its derivatives go to zero as
t → ∞. Show that w obeys

wt = wxx , 0 < x < π, t > 0,

w(0, t) = 0, t > 0,
w(π, t) = 0, t > 0,
w(x, 0) = f (x) − v(x), 0 < x < π,

and v obeys
v ′′ (x) = −g(x), v(0) = 0 = v(π).

(b) (2 points) Let g(x) = 4 sin(2x). Find v(x).

(c) (4 points) Using v(x) from part (b) and letting f (x) = 2π, find w(x, t) for all 0 ≤ x ≤ π
and all t ≥ 0.
(d) (1 point) Using the results of parts (b) and (c), find u(x, t) for all 0 ≤ x ≤ π and all t ≥ 0
when g(x) = sin(2x) and u(x, 0) = f (x) = π.

The following question is not to be passed in, and will not be graded.

4. Solve the following initial-boundary value problems for the wave equation:
(a)

utt = uxx , 0 < x < 1, t > 0,

u(0, t) = 0, t ≥ 0,
u(1, t) = 0, t ≥ 0,
u(x, 0) = 0, 0 < x < 1,
ut (x, 0) = 2 sin(πx) − 3 sin(4πx), 0 < x < 1.

(b)

utt = 9uxx , 0 < x < π, t > 0,

u(0, t) = 0, t ≥ 0,
u(π, t) = 0, t ≥ 0,
u(x, 0) = x(π − x), 0 < x < π,
ut (x, 0) = 0, 0 < x < π.
