l b + 3 1 > 2l b - 3 1
Distance and absolute value
which is choice (B).
The absolute value of a number x, written as lxl,
means its distance from 0 on the number line. In
fact, we can use absolute value to represent the
distance between any two numbers.

Ix - a l means the distance between x and a on

the number line.

Notice that this works no matter which number is

greater. For instance, the distance between 2 and
7 is 12 - 7 1 = I - S I = S, which is the same as the
distance between 7 and 2: 1 7 - 21 = ISi = S.
Notice that an expression like Ix + al is equiva
lent to Ix - (-a)I, which means that Ix + a l can
be translated as the distance between x and -a.
