FERNAND S.

PALACIO PURCOM-O

Communication plays a vital role in society. It is our way to understand each other, to
share our thoughts, and to express our opinions. It evolves drastically through time with
accordance to the change of generations. It started from curved paintings that challenged the
ability of the people to understand symbols. And now we are utilizing the use of social media as
our medium for communication, giving us convenience that makes our lives better on a daily
basis.

The evolution of communication is necessary in embracing the inevitable change of

society. We need to adapt to the change of time; that is the reason why the mode of
communication has to evolve. However, even with the changes, there is still one thing that needs
to be the same. And that is the goal of communication, which is mutual understanding. Even if
the communication is in letter or in radio, both parties should have a mutual understanding to
avoid any conflict to arise. And that is the role of ethics in the evolution of communication: it
keeps it on its main goal.

Moreover, there are ten ethics of communication, but among those I personally mostly
practice the “Rights vs. Responsibilities.”. As a people pleaser type of person, I always consider
the feelings of the people around me. And so, as much as possible, I always try to talk less and be
mindful of the words that come out of my mouth. This type of ethics is very important because it
keeps us aware of our limitations with our freedom of speech. It reminds us that we need to make
use of our rights accordingly, because after all, words can be as fatal as actions. Thus, let’s all
compromise and do our own part. Let’s be sensitive and be a good communicator.
