RECTILINEAR MOTION WITH NON-UNIFORM ACCELERATION
Kinematic Equations
Velocity, time and distance
V = d/t
Velocity as a Function of Time
𝑉𝑓 = 𝑉𝑜 + a𝑡
Position as a Function of Time
1 2
S = VOt + at
2
Velocity as a Function of Position
Vf 2 = VO 2 + 2aS
Where:
a = acceleration
a - negative for object decelerating
a - positive for object accelerating
Vf = final velocity
Vo = initial velocity
t = time elapsed/taken
SAMPLE PROBLEMS:
1. On a certain stretch of track, trains run at 60 kph. How far of a stopped train should a warning
torpedo be placed to signal an incoming train? Assume that the brakes are applied at once and retard
the train at the uniform rate of 2 ft per sec.
2. Cars A and B are traveling in the same direction at the same speed of 70kph along a level road with
Car A 150m ahead of Car B. Car A decelerates at 2m/𝑠2.From this instant up to the time B overtakes
A, how far has A traveled?
3. From a speed of 60kph, a train decelerates at the rate of 2m/𝑚𝑖𝑛2 along the path. How far in meters
will it travel after 14 minutes?
4. From a speed of 85kph, a car decelerates at the rate of 10m/min.sec. along a straight road.
Determine the distance traveled at the end of 30 sec.
5. Two cars A and B have a velocity of 25 m/sec in the same direction. A is 73.5 m behind B when the
breaks are applied to car B, causing it to decelerate at a constant rate of 3 m/sec 2.
a. In what time will A overtake B?
b. How far will car A travel?
