CASE STUDY
1. SURVIVAL STRATEGIES DURING COVID 19 PANDEMIC
Zimbabwe is one of the countries that were seriously affected by COVID-19 pandemic
since 2020. The COVID 19 pandemic forced most of the companies in Zimbabwe to scale
down their operations. Companies were forced to comply with the Statutory Instrument
SI 77 of 2020 which stated that company’s workforce coming to the office had to be
scaled down to 40%. Eventually, most companies retrenched staff due to repeated low
business.
Nenyasha was one of the people who were made redundant during the period. She was
given her exit benefits and decided to set up a business enterprise. A friend advised her to
venture into farming, specializing with crop production. Nenyasha decided to locate to
her rural home in Zvimba where she owns vast land.
Nenyasha has successfully established herself as a small-scale farmer. She is producing
grain products which include maize and wheat, as well as other crops such as beans on
small scale. She attended a workshop which was recently held in Chinhoyi for Small to
Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The workshop focused on value addition and beneficiation.
The knowledge Nenyasha gained from the workshop helped her to start processing maize
into mealie meal and wheat into flour, packaging them and selling to the local
community. She wishes to increase her market share from 2% to 5% through e-marketing.
The growth of the business enterprise might lead Nenyasha to consider expanding into
animal husbandry.
