FIRST SEMESTER EXAMS
1(a) State the following terms (i) Equilibrant of two forces (ii)
center of mass (iii) moment of a couple (iv) stable
equilibrium (v) Parallelogram of forces
(vi) center of gravity.

b) A uniform 1m rod pivoted at the center is caused to turn


through 3 revolutions by two forces each of 10N applied in
both ends of the rod to constitute a couple. Calculate the
torque on the rod and the work done by the couple.

c) A uniform metre rule balances on a knife edge at the 55cm


mark when a mass of 40g is hung from the 95cm mark. Find
the weight of the ruler.
d) State the conditions for equilibrium.
2a) Define the following terms (i) Simple harmonic motion (ii)
damped oscillation (iii) synchronous satellite (iv) Kepler 2 nd &
3rd law (v) Angular acceleration.

b) A body ties a stone to the end of a string which he then whirls


above his head round a circular path of radius 15cm. If the
stone makes 20 oscillation in 10sec, calculate the angular and
linear speeds of the stone.

3a) Explain the terms (i) Newton’s Law of restitution (ii)


Explosive Collision, (iii) Perfectly inelastic Collision, (iv) Law
of conservation of momentum.

b) Object A of mass 20kg moving with a velocity of 3m/s makes


a head-on collision with object B, mass 10kg moving with a
velocity of 2m/s in the opposite direction. If A and B stick
together after Collision, calculate their common velocity v in
the direction A.

4a) Define the terms (i) Work done and power (ii) renewable and
none renewable energy resources
b) State the V.R for the following machines
i) Incline plane
ii) Pulley system
iii) Screw jack
iv) hydraulic press

5a) A pump is made to spray water from a pool to form a


fountain. Determine the minimum power of the pump if it
ejects 600g of water per half a minute and the spray reaches
an average vertical height of 5m. (g=10m/s2).
b) Differentiate between derived unit, Base quantities and
Dimension.
c) State two uses of dimensional analysis and examples.
d) Consider a small ball of radius r falling through a viscous
liquid of viscosity  with a velocity v. Derive the exact form
of relation between the viscous force F experienced by the
ball and r,  and v; given that F = Krxyvz where K is a
dimensionless constant and x, y, and  are to be determined
by the method of dimensions.

6a) Derive the expression for (i) The path taken by a projectile
(ii) Range (iii) The maximum height.
b) A body is projected at such an angle that the horizontal
range is three times the greatest height. Find the angle of
projection.
c) A ball is projected upwards with a velocity of 15m/s at an
angle of 400 with the horizontal. What is the horizontal range
of the ball?
7a) Explain the following (i) Dot product (ii) Vector product (iii) A
unit rector.
b) If A = 2i + 3j + 2k and B = 3i + 4j + 3k, calculate (i) A.B (ii)
A+B (iii) unit vector of B (iv) the angle between A and B.
c) If the position rector r = (3t-5t 3+t2)i +(6-3t2)j. Calculate the
velocity and acceleration at t=3sec.
8a) Explain the following terms (i) linear speed (ii)
displacement (iii) instantaneous acceleration
(iv) velocity.
b) Define the 2nd and 3rd laws of motion.
c) A body starts from rest and accelerated uniformly in a straits
line units it reaches a velocity of 40m/s in 8sec. it than
travels a constant speed for 3 seconds after which it is
uniformly retarded and brought to rest in 5 sec. Calculation
acceleration (ii) retardation (iii) total distance covered.

9a) State the law of Inertia and impulse

c) A revolver of mass 6kg releases a bullet of mass 0.05kg at a
speed of 200m/s. Find the revolvers speed of recoil.
d) What is the weight of a 75kg astronaut on (i) earth
(g=9.8m/s2) (ii) the moon (g = 1.7m/s2)
