Tutorial 2

General Instructions:

Answer all the questions. Use figures, calculations, tables wherever possible. Plagiarizing /
Copying the material without acknowledging the source is a serious academic breach, unethical
and will be awarded zero score. All the assignments will be uploaded on virtual learning
environment platform (VLE) and submission dateline will be 1 week from the date of uploading
the assignment.

1. Describe the various factors that influence breakdown in gases.

2. State and explain Townsends current growth theory with relevant equations and
waveforms.
3. State the importance of High Voltage in electrical power systems.
4. State and explain Paschen’s Law. How do you account for the minimum voltage for
breakdown under given potential difference condition?
5. Defining corona discuss the effect of polarity of voltage on corona and breakdown
process.
6. Explain the general practice of earthing the neutral point of power system and discuss
with relative merits of earthing it by
a. Solidly
b. Through a resistance
7. Differentiate between Townsend’s first and second ionization coefficient. Give the
condition for breakdown obtained in a Townsend discharge. Explain how this condition is
obtained.
8. A 3 phase 132kV, 50 Hz transmission line, 150km long consists of three stranded
aluminum conductors spaced at equal distance of 3.8m apart arranged in the form of an
equilateral triangle. The surrounding air is at temperature of 30C and the barometric
pressure of 750mm of Hg. Determine the disruptive critical voltage. Assume the
conductor diameter of 19.53 mm, irregularity factor of 0.85 and breakdown strength of air
21.1kV(rms) per cm.
9. What are the main causes of voltage surges on OH transmission lines? Explain how the
waveform of a surge is specified. Discuss the protection of terminal equipment.
10. Discuss the various parameters and characteristics of lightning strokes.
11. Explain with the help of a diagram, how a transmission line is protected against lightning
by using:
a. Ground wire
b. Auxiliary device
12. What is voltage-time curve? State their significance in HV engineering.
13. What is travelling wave? Explain the development of such a wave on an OH line.
14. Explain the mechanism of formation and development of streamers leading to
breakdown of gases.
15. What is corona? Explain clearly corona at anode and cathode of a discharge tube.
