Strategies to solve Numerical and Proof Type Riders

Strategies to solve Numerical Riders and Proof Type Riders:

• Read the given information thoroughly and tear - out important information from the
given statement. from the diagram (don’t assume information from the diagram)

• Put all the given information to the Diagram

• Don’t Assume!
o Don’t assume that a certain line are parallel unless it is clearly state or unless you can
show it.

o Don’t assume that a point is the centre of a circle unless it is clearly stated.

• Relate a theorem and the given Diagram/ Recognizing theorems in simple

diagrams

Strategies to solve Numerical and Proof Type Riders

• From the given information look for Keywords (those that relate to
theorems/axiom)
o Tangent: What do the theorems say about tangents?
o Cyclic Quad: What are the properties of a cyclic quad?
o Diameter: Is there an angle in the semi-circle?

• Generate the ‘Grocery list’ with reasons

o Properly name the angles and mark all equal angles with the same color
(Remember you have a red pen, black, blue & a pencil, etc.)
• Acceptable reasons : use the correct terminology and notation i.e. acceptable
reasons and the correct notation as per the exam guidelines

• Identify the condition that must be used to solve the problem

• Concluding statement with appropriate reasons.

Strategies to solve Numerical and Proof Type Riders

Learners must understand what they need to prove to show that:

• Lines are parallel
o Alternate Angle must be equal
o Corresponding angles must be equal
o Co-interior Angles are supplementary

• A quad is Cyclic
o If the opposite angles are supplementary
o If the Exterior Angle is equal to the interior opposite angle
o If angle subtended by the same line segment are equal

• A line is a tangent to a circle

o Prove the converse of the Tan chord theorem
o Prove that a line is perpendicular to a line through the centre
52
Strategies to solve Numerical and Proof Type Riders

• Two sides of triangle are equal

o If the two sides are opposite equal angles.
• Similar Triangles
o Two triangles are equiangular
o Corresponding sides are in the same proportion

• A line is parallel to one side of the triangle

o If a line divides the other two sides of a triangle proportionally

• A line bisects the angle

o A line passing through a vertex of two adjacent angle and cut it into
equal angles
