Tutorial 5

The document presents a series of algebra problems related to field theory and group theory. It includes tasks such as proving the unsolvability of Sn for n ≥ 5, demonstrating properties of finite normal extensions, and constructing specific types of field extensions. The problems are aimed at exploring advanced concepts in algebra, particularly in the context of Galois theory and extensions of fields.

ALGEBRA TUTORIAL 4

Problems
Throughout k, F, K, E are fields
1. Show Sn is not solvable for n ≥ 5.
2. Let E be a finite normal extension of k. Let F be the separable closure of k in
E. Show F is Galois over k.
3. Let k be a field of characteristic zero. Let E be an algebraic extension of k
such that every non-constant polynomial in k[X] has a root in E. Show E is
algebraically closed.
4. Let G be a finite abelian group of exponent n. Let Cn be the group of nth -roots
of unity. Set Gb = Hom(G, Cn ). Show G ∼ = G.

5. Let k be a field of characteristic p > 0. Set K = k(X). Construct the following
(a) A finite extension E of K which is separable over K and E ̸= K.
(b) A finite extension F of K which is purely inseparable over K and F ̸= K.
(c) A finite extension L of K which is neither seperable nor purely inseparable
over K and L ̸= K.
