Assignment 1 Engineering Physics
ASSIGNMENT – I
Engineering Physics
Before starting the assignment first remove all confusion about the concept used in questions of assignment.
Submit Assignment on due date, no Assignment will be marked after due date.
Each Assignment carries equal marks in the internal marks of the subject.
2. Show that two events P1 and P2 occurring simultaneously in rest frame S are not simultaneous in the frame S’ moving
with a uniform velocity v along X axis.
3. Show that a signal moving with velocity u > c reaches the destination before it started ( Hint: Δt’< 0)
a) E²- p²c²
b) x²+y²+z²- c²t²
c) ds²= c²dt²-dx²-dy²-dz² where dx = x1-x2, dy =y1-y2, dz =z1-z2 and dt = t1-t2
5. Two twins A and B are of 25 year age. A remains at rest and B travels with a velocity √3𝑐/2 along the +ve X axis for one
year and returns back to reach the starting point after one year in his own clock. What are the ages of A and B.
6. What will be the percentage of length contraction of a rod that is moving with velocity 0.5c in a direction at angle of
45˚ with its own length?
7. A man weighs 50 kg on the earth. When he is in rocket ship in flight his mass is 50.5 kg as measured by an observer on
earth. What is the speed of the rocket?
8. Obtain an expression for the addition of the relativistic velocities. Two particles came towards each other with speed
0.7c with respect to laboratory. Determine their relative speed.
09. Calculate the relativistic energy and momentum of a proton which is moving with a speed of 2.4 x 108 m/sec.
10. A particle has a kinetic energy 20 times its rest energy. Determine the speed of particle in terms of c.
11. A particle is in motion along a line between 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 𝑎 with zero potential energy. At points for which 𝑥 < 0 and
𝑥 > 𝑎, the potential energy is infinite. The wave function for the particle in 𝑛𝑡ℎ state is given by
𝜓𝑛 = 𝐴 sin 𝑛𝜋𝑥 𝑎
Find the expression for the normalized wave functions.
12. Explain group velocity. Show that group velocity is equal to particle velocity. Determine the phase and group
velocities of an electron whose deBroglie wavelength is 1.2 Å.
13. Derive time independent and time dependent Schrödinger wave equation for a particle wave. What would happen
to equation if particle is free?
14. Explain de-Broglie’s hypothesis. Discuss the outcome of Davisson-Germer’s experiment in detail. Calculate the kinetic
energy of an electron if its de-Broglie wavelength equals the wavelength of the yellow line of sodium (5796 Å).
15. The speed of an electron is measured to be 5.0 × 103 𝑚/𝑠 to an accuracy of 0.003%. Find the uncertainty in
determining the position of this electron (mass of electron is 9.1 × 10−31 𝑘𝑔 and Planck’s constant is 6.62 × 10−34 𝐽𝑠).
