Kinematics

The document covers the topic of kinematics, which focuses on the motion of objects without considering the forces involved. It provides basic formulas related to displacement, velocity, time, and acceleration, along with several example problems for practical application. These examples illustrate how to calculate distances and accelerations in various scenarios, such as vehicles and rocket sleds.

Kinematics

Kinematics is the study of the motion of objects without concern

for the forces causing the motion. These familiar equations allow
students to analyze and predict the motion of objects, and
students will continue to use these equations throughout their
study of physics.

Basic Formulas

where: S = displacement
V = velocity
t = time
Vf = final velocity
Vi = initial velocity
a = acceleration

Examples:
An airplane accelerates down a runway at 3.20 m/s2 for 32.8sec
until is finally lifts off the ground. Determine the distance traveled
before takeoff.

A car traveling at 22.4 m/s skids to a stop in 2.55 sec. Determine

the skidding distance of the car (assume uniform acceleration).

Rocket-powered sleds are used to test the human response to

acceleration. If a rocket-powered sled is accelerated to a speed of
444 m/s in 1.83 seconds, then what is the acceleration and what
is the distance that the sled travels?
