Written questions:
Make sure to show your work, including a sketch, and a definition of your variables so that
we can follow your reasoning.
1. (9 marks) A 20 kg suitcase is dragged by a person up a 30◦ ramp for 10 m at constant
velocity. For this surface we have µs = 0.3 and µk =0.25.
(a) Draw a free body diagram of all the forces acting on the suitcase. Of the forces
which are doing work, which are conservative and which are nonconservative? .
(c) What is the total change in mechanical energy? Would this answer change if there
were no friction?
(d) What is the work done by the net forces on the suitcase?

2. (7 marks) A 1 kg toy car is held against a spring which is initially compressed by 0.1 m
from equilibrium, as shown. The spring constant is 4000 N· m. The toy car is released
from rest and accelerated by the spring and undergoes a “loop-the-loop”. Note: there
is no friction, and no drag force. Assume g = 10 m/s2 .
(a) What is the velocity of the car at the bottom and at the top of the “loop-the-
loop”?
(b) What is the direction and magnitude of the centripetal force at the top? How
does this compare with the gravity force?
(c) What is the magnitude and direction of the normal force on the car at the top of
the loop? Draw a free body diagram for the car at the top of the loop.

3. (6 marks) A crow of mass 0.5 kg is flying horizontally at constant velocity along the
x-axis. An eagle of mass 2 kg is diving vertically and catches the crow in its claws and
holds onto it. At the instant after the collision, the velocity of the combined mass of
the two birds is 20 m/s downwards at an angle of 10◦ from vertical:
(a) What were the initial momentum values and velocities of each the two birds?
(b) During the collision, the birds exerted forces on each other for ∼ 0.5 s. What was
the y-component of the average force exerted by the sea gull on the eagle during
the collision?

4. A 60 kg person stands on the end of a rigid beam of total length 6 m. The beam is
supported by a frictionless hinge on the right as shown below. The person stands 2 m
from the hinge. A rope at an angle of 30◦ above horizontal holds the beam horizontal.
Neglect the mass of the beam and the mass of the rope.
(a) Draw the free body diagram for the beam (2marks) (include all forces!)
(c) Write down the equations for the forces on the beam. Find the vertical component
of the force the hinge exerts on the beam. (2 marks)

5. You drag a 60 kg suitcase up a 30◦ ramp at a constant velocity of 0.25 m/s. The
coefficient of kinetic friction is µk = 0.20. The total distance dragged is 10 m.
(a) Find the work done by gravity, by the friction force, and by the normal force
(b) Find the power exerted by the force of gravity on the suitcase.
(c) What is the work done by the net forces on the suitcase?
(d) Is mechanical energy of the suitcase conserved in this question? Explain briefly.

6. A solid disk of mass M = 2.0 kg and radius R = 0.5 m is free to rotate about a fixed
axis through its center. A force of F = 10.0 N is applied tangentially to the edge of
the disk. The moment of inertia of a solid disk about its central axis is I = 12 M R2 .
(c) If the disk starts from rest, find its angular velocity after 5.0 seconds.
(d) Determine the angular kinetic energy of the disk after 5.0 seconds.
