Class Note 1: Understand the concept of management

Definition of Management:
Management is defined as a process of getting things done by others with the
aim of achieving organizational goals effectively and efficiently.

You can remember:

"MaP-GO-EASY":
 M – Management
 P – Process
 G – Getting things done
 O – Organizational goals
 E – Effectively
 E – Efficiently

 Why is management considered a "process" rather than just a task or an action?

 How does the phrase "getting things done by others" highlight the importance of
leadership and teamwork in management?
 In what ways can a manager ensure that organizational goals are achieved both
effectively and efficiently?

Characteristics of Management:
1. Process: Refers to primary activities or functions performed to accomplish tasks.
2. Getting Things Done: Involves guiding and helping others through instructions,
motivation, and teamwork.
3. Organizational Goals: Targets or aims like increasing sales or improving
customer satisfaction to measure success.
4. Effectively and Efficiently: Achieving goals (effectively) with minimal waste
(efficiently).
5. Universal: Required in all organizations, irrespective of type, size, or location.
6. Continuous Process: Ongoing with no fixed endpoint.
7. Multidimensional: Involves managing work, people, and operations.
8. Dynamic Function: Adjusts to changes in the environment.
Class Activity:
Case Study 1: Neha is a wedding planner. She started working on a big wedding but did
things in a random order. She booked the band before the venue, and the caterers arrived
before she had final guest numbers. Everything became confusing and delayed.
Question: Which management concept is missing in Neha’s approach?

Answer:
Process is missing. Management follows steps in the right order to avoid confusion.

Case Study 2: Ajay is the manager of a small restaurant. He takes orders, cooks, and
manages accounts all by himself. His staff sits idle, waiting for his instructions. Because
he does everything alone, customers wait too long for food, and some even leave.
Question: Which management principle did Ajay fail to apply?
Answer:
Getting things done by others. A manager should give tasks to others instead of doing
everything alone.

Case Study 3: Rahul started an online business but didn’t give clear goals to his team.
Some worked on advertising, others on product making, but they had no plan. Customers
were confused, and the business did not grow.
Question: What key aspect of management was ignored in Rahul’s startup?

Answer:
Achieving organizational goals. A business must have clear goals so that everyone
works towards the same result.

Case Study 4: A factory making school bags started producing more bags in less time.
But the zippers were weak, and the straps broke easily. Customers complained, and many
bags were returned.
Question: Which aspect of management is violated here?

Answer:
Effectiveness & Efficiency. The factory was fast (efficient) but did not make good-quality
bags (effective). Both are important.
