Colour Code For Carbon Resistors

Carbon resistors are essential components in electrical circuits that regulate electricity flow, and their small size necessitated the use of a color code for identification. The color code system, established by the Radio Manufacturing Association in the 1920s, uses colored bands to indicate resistance values, tolerance, and dependability. Understanding how to read these color bands is crucial for determining the resistance and tolerance of carbon resistors.

Carbon Resistors

A.closed path or loop composed of electrical components that allows electrons to

flow through it is known as a circuit. The main components of an electrical circuit are
resistors, transistors, inductors, capacitors and diodes.A resistor is an electrical
component that limits or regulates the flow of electricity in an electrical
circuit.Although there are many types of resistors used in electrical circuits the main
type commonly found in electrical circuits are carbon resistors. This is due to the fact
that carbon resistors are easy to operate and input into an electrical circuit. Due to
the small size of carbon resistors it was difficult to print the resistance value onto the
resistor itself so a colour code was implemented in order to prevent confusion on
resistors with different colour codes.

Colour Codes For Resistors

The radio manufacturing Association(RMA) implemented the colouring code in the
1920s. Different coloured bands were placed over resistores the power rating is
determined by the amount of bands placed around the resistor which also
determines the value of resistance, tolerance, and dependability rates.

THE SYSTEM FOR CLASSIFYING COLOUR CODES

Reading Colour Bands

In order to read power bands remember the these basic rules:
● The first two band will tell you the value and resistance in ohms.
● The third band tells you the decimal multiplier
● The fourth metallic band represents the tolerance at 5% or 10%
● If there is no fourth band then the tolerance is assumed to be 20%
