Definition of:

a) Hardware is the physical components or tangible parts of a computer for example


keyboard, mouse, screen, printer, speakers etc.
b) Operating system is a program that run first when one switches on a computer and
continues to run in a background, and all programmes run under the control of an
operating system.
c) Application software are programs designed to help the user to carry specific tasks
for example to manipulate figures or write texts.

2. a) Functions of an operating system:

 It is user interface meaning that it allows the user to communicate with the
computer in loading programs accessing files and accomplishing tasks through
command driven, menu driven or graphical user interface.
 Resource management that is, it manages the hardware resources of a computer
system including central processing unit (CPU), memory, secondary storage device
and input/output peripheral. For example a memory program keeps track of where
data and programs are stored.
 File management in the operating system control the creation, deletion and access
of data and programs. The programs also keep track of the physical location of files
on secondary storage units.

b) Benefits of computer networking:

 It allows computer to share data and programs, use a common printer or modems
and share the internet connection as well.
 Computer networking support communication and file transfer between the users.

c) Application area of:

i. Barcode reader also called a price scanner or point-of-sale (POS) scanner, it holds
information (code number) to identify a specific product price and it is used in shops
by till operators
ii. OMR meaning Optical mark recognition or optical mark reading for scanning papers
to detect the presence or absence of a mark in a predetermined position.
3. a) Difference between:

i. A header or footer is text or graphic that is usually printed at the top or bottom of
every page in a document, a header is located at the top of the page and a footer is
at the bottom of the page.
ii. Page border and border: Page border are applied on the whole page and border are
applied on a paragraph or table.
iii. Portrait and landscape: are two types of page orientation, portrait mode is taller
than it is wide, and a page or image displayed in landscape is tall.
a) Click the inset tab in order to find a page number.
b) The font type and fond size recommended for assignment and CDS at B.T.T.C IS Times
New Roman and fond size 12.

4.a)Uses of excel in education:

Excel is used for mark schedule in education and to collect large volumes of data for
statistics in mathematics.

b) Difference between:

 Delete or del and backspace keys both are used to correct mistakes, pressing the
backspace key will erase characters on the left side of the curse, pressing delete will
erase characters on the right side of the curse.
 Formula is a set of instruction to Microsoft Excel to take information from other
cells, perform, some calculation and put the results in the existing cell. A function
helps the user with syntax to be carried out.
 Relative cell referencing changes and adapt as assigned when pasted to other cells
whereas relative cell reference do not perform as the relative does.

c) Five functions commonly used in MS EXCEL:

 Mathematical function for calculation.


 Statistical function.
 Text function.
 Financial function.
 Look up and reference function.

b) Three educational application of power point are:

 Statistical presentation.
