B102-LIFE OF CHRIST FEBRUARY 20, 2024

THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

HISTORICAL PAPER: FEATURING ONE OF CANONICAL
BOOK

Matthew was the only direct disciple of Jesus. Mark was a disciple of Simon Peter and Luke a
disciple of Paul of Tarsus, hence the Synoptic Problem. Some scholars favor Matthew as the
source and Mark and Luke’s Gospel derived from Matthew’s and a hypothetical source which
they call Q. Document. There is no proof of this, only the historical testimony of who was with
Jesus and who wasn’t.Jesus started His ministry by asking John to baptize him, (Mat.3:13-17)
but John tried to deter him, Jesus insisted on the grounds of fulfilling righteousness. Once
baptized, Jesus went up out of the water and in that moment heaven was opened and the Spirit of
God descended upon Him. He then went to the desert for forty days and forty nights to fast and
meditate. It was at the end of that fasting that de evil one came to tempt Him. Yet, although
hungry in the flesh he was filled with the spirit of God and did not succumb. (Mat.4:2-11) Jesus’
strength and spiritual nurturing came from doing the will of God, from deep within. Foremost,
He believed in his Father, he lived the scripture. In John.15:2-17 Jesus explains how remaining
in God, by fulfillment of the law, giving to the needy, prayer and fasting is what leads the way.
This is how He fostered his own spiritual life. According to the historians, Jesus Christ was a real
person born around 3 B.C or 4 B.C. A large part of knowledge about Jesus Christ was derived
from the New Testament of the Holy Bible. According to the scripture, a young virgin, namely
Mary, gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem, a town located in the south of Jerusalem ( modern-day
Palestine). Scripture says that the happening was a divine supernatural event with God
impregnating Mary through the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ- The Hope Of All Nations Jesus Christ
was the light that came to earth to brighten the lives of the people. He taught phenomenal and
meaningful lessons that changed many hearts and caused people to accept Jesus as their Lord.
Jesus Christ is the life of Christianity; the Word of God in flesh. His life, his ministry, and his
crucifixion where prophesied long before he was born and Christians believe that they were all
fulfilled. He had so much love for human kind that he came to earth to die for the sins of the
people, so that their souls would be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The Bible testifies that
Jesus Christ is the Son of God who taught memorable life lessons and performed astonishing
miracles during his ministry The Messiah left the people hopeful by explaining how easy it is to
enter the kingdom of Heaven. According to Matthew 5:3-12, the people with righteous hearts
will definitely inherit the kingdom of Heaven. Jesus inspires everyone to be humble, merciful,
peaceful, and kind to one another, and he also mentions the importance of forgiveness and love
several times, portraying his loving nature. Christ warns the nations to not fear persecution,
because their reward in heaven will be great. Jesus mentions that Christians are to be the salt of
the earth and the light of the world. However, salt without saltiness is worthless; hence,
Christians without spiritual knowledge won’t get far in life. Christ motivates Christians to stand
out by being loving, kind, compassionate; a reflection of Jesus so that unbelievers are eager to
become Christians as well (New International Version, Matt.5:13-17). Additionally, he mentions
the consequences of murder, adultery, and divorce. He talks about the sincerity of oaths and the
importance of loving your enemies and giving to the poor. Jesus preaches about the importance
of prayer because it is the way of communicating with the Lord. The Lord favors intimate and
personal prayers over hypocritical prayers in public (New International Version, Matt.5.21-
33,43, 6.1-5,25). Christ mentions the …show more content… It is about a son who abandons his
family to “squander his wealth in wild living” (New International Version, Luke.15.13). After
losing all his wealth he recognizes the importance of family and returns home. His father
lovingly welcomes him because he will always love his son, regardless of the incident. God
loves all His children; even the ones that abandon Him. All He asks of us is to repent from our
sins and seek Him with all our hearts. This parable motivates believers to always repent because
God is the most merciful and forgiving. Besides teaching about the good news, Jesus also
performed miracles that caused many people to believe in his According to the bible who is
Jesus? According the bible, Jesus is the son of God, and God is within Jesus whilst he is on earth.
Jesus came to earth to preach Christianity. Jesus was the promised Messiah of Israel, and is often
prayed to along with God In the bible, Jesus is the way of redemption. Jesus was sent to earth to
destroy everyone’s sins and clean a new slate for them to be good people and be accepted into
Heaven with God. The reason behind the upmost respect towards Jesus is that he gave his own
life by being tortured and nailed to a crucifix to heal people of their sins. He is described in Luke
23:26-43 as carrying his crucifix to his place of death, where he was whipped and then nailed by
his hands and ankles to a crucifix and left to die next to other criminals who were also crucified.
The men spoke to Jesus, asking him why he wouldn’t save himself and asking him to remember
them when he enters Heaven, and he simply replied “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me
in paradise.” This is showing that Jesus was a forgiving man, and that he had done his job on
earth. According to the bible, Jesus was also resurrected and was taken from his place he lay
without moving the Unlike the question “Does God exist?” the question of whether Jesus Christ
existed is asked by relatively few people. Most accept that Jesus was truly a man who lived in
Israel 2,000 years ago. The debate begins with the discussion of Jesus’ full identity. Almost
every major religion teaches that Jesus was a prophet or a good teacher or a godly man. But the
Bible tells us that Jesus was infinitely more than a prophet, a good teacher, or a godly man. C. S.
Lewis in his book Mere Christianity writes the following: “I am trying here to prevent anyone
from saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him [Jesus Christ]: ‘I’m ready to
accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God.’ That is the one
thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would
not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with a man who says he is
a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this
man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for
a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord
and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human
teacher. He has not left that option open to us. He did not intend to” (Macmillan, 1952, p. 55–
56). So, who did Jesus claim to be? Who does the Bible say He is? First, He is God in the flesh.
Jesus said in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” At first glance, this might not seem to be a
claim to be God. However, look at the Jews’ reaction to His statement. They tried to stone Him
“for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33). The Jews understood
Jesus’ statement as a claim to be God. In the following verses, Jesus never corrects the Jews or
attempts to clarify His statement. He never says, “I did not claim to be God.” When Jesus said, “I
and the Father are one” (John 10:30), He truly was claiming equality with God. In John 8:58
Jesus claims pre-existence, an attribute of God: “‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before
Abraham was born, I am!’” In response to this statement, the Jews again took up stones to stone
Jesus (John 8:59). In claiming pre-existence, Jesus applied a name for God to Himself—I AM
(see Exodus 3:14). The Jews rejected Jesus’ identity as God Incarnate, but they understood
exactly what He was saying. Other biblical clues that Jesus is God in the flesh include John 1:1,
which says, “The Word was God,” coupled with John 1:14, which says, “The Word became
flesh.” Thomas the disciple declared to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28), Jesus does
not correct him. The apostle Paul describes Jesus as “our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ”
(Titus 2:13). The apostle Peter says the same, calling Jesus “our God and Savior” (2 Peter 1:1).
God the Father bears witness of Jesus’ identity as well: “But about the Son he says, ‘Your
throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your
kingdom’” (Hebrews 1:8; cf. Psalm 45:6). Old Testament prophecies such as Isaiah 9:6
announce the deity of Christ: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace”
