UCI 103: WORD PROCESSING AND DESIGN OF PRESENTATIONS

COURSE OUTLINE

Course Description
This course is an introductory course to the information systems. It is specifically designed for
those students who have had little or no experience with computers. It gives an overview of the
basic components of processing systems, namely the environment, software, hardware, people,
behavior, tasks and connectivity. Review of various applications such as word processing,
spreadsheets, databases, presentation and operating system software is given.

Course Learning Outcomes


At the end of the course, students should be able to:
-Exhibit an understanding of the basic computer concepts and terminology
-Identify system components, efficiently use the keyboard and the mouse, and demonstrate the
correct use and care of basic hardware and software.

Course Content:

Overview of Word processors, Hands on experience with a typical word processor; Editing a
Document, Text Formatting, Paragraph formatting, Page Formatting, Styles, Headers and
Footers, Working with Graphics, Tables, Lists, Mail merging, Table of Contents etc; Hands on
experience with a typical presentation processor; Different views of slides, Working with slides,
Manipulating content on slides. Working with multimedia on slides; text, images, graphics,
video.

Specific Objectives

The learner should be able to accomplish the following at the end of the course unit:

1. Describe a Word Processor, load the software and use it:

Create, format (text, paragraph and page formatting – styles, Headers and Footers)/edit a
document, including spell checking.

2. Work with Graphics, Tables, Lists, Mail merging, Table of Contents, Hyperlink

3. Load a Presentation Package such as Microsoft PowerPoint work with it: create different
views of slides, Work with slides, Manipulate content on slides. Work with multimedia on
slides; text, images, graphics, video.
