Compare ISI and ICI

ISI and ICI are abbreviations used in the field of digital communication and signal processing, and they
stand for Intersymbol Interference and Inter-Carrier Interference, respectively. While both terms refer to
types of interference that can occur in communication systems, they are associated with different aspects
of the signal.

Intersymbol Interference (ISI):


Intersymbol Interference refers to the distortion or overlap of symbols in a digital communication system.
It occurs when the received symbols spread into adjacent symbol periods, leading to interference and
difficulty in correctly detecting the symbols. ISI typically occurs in systems where the channel or
transmission medium introduces dispersion or multipath propagation.

The main causes of ISI are delays and frequency-selective fading in the channel. Delays cause different
paths of the transmitted signal to arrive at different times, while frequency-selective fading affects
different frequency components of the signal unequally. Both of these phenomena can result in
overlapping symbols and, thus, interference.

ISI can be mitigated through various techniques such as equalization, which attempts to compensate for
the distortion caused by the channel and recover the original symbols. Adaptive equalization algorithms
and techniques like maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are commonly employed to
combat ISI.
Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI):

Inter-Carrier Interference refers to the interference that arises in multi-carrier communication systems,
such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM divides the available frequency
spectrum into multiple narrow subcarriers, each carrying a portion of the data. In such systems, ICI occurs
when the subcarriers are not perfectly synchronized, resulting in interference between adjacent
subcarriers.
The main causes of ICI are frequency offsets and Doppler shifts. Frequency offsets can occur due to
imperfections in the local oscillators of the transmitter and receiver, while Doppler shifts arise when there
is relative motion between the transmitter/receiver and the channel (e.g., in mobile communication
systems).

ICI can degrade the performance of multi-carrier systems by introducing inter-symbol interference
between the subcarriers. To mitigate ICI, techniques such as frequency and phase synchronization, cyclic
prefix insertion, and advanced equalization algorithms are employed.

In summary, ISI refers to interference caused by overlapping symbols in a single-carrier communication


system, often due to delays and frequency-selective fading. On the other hand, ICI pertains to interference
between subcarriers in multi-carrier systems like OFDM, caused by frequency offsets and Doppler shifts.

What is AWGN and Matched Filter

Matched filter definition is: if a filter generates an output to maximize the output peak power ratio to
mean noise power within its frequency response then it is called a matched filter. In telecommunications,
it is the optimal linear filter used to increase the SNR or signal-to-noise ratio in the existence of additive
stochastic noise.

AWGN (Additive White Gaussian Noise) is a type of random noise that is often encountered in
communication systems and signal processing. It is called "white" because it has a constant power
spectral density across all frequencies, and "Gaussian" because the probability distribution of its samples
follows a Gaussian (or normal) distribution. AWGN can be introduced by various factors such as thermal
noise, atmospheric interference, or electronic components in a communication channel.

AWGN is commonly used as a model to represent the effects of noise in communication systems. When a
signal is transmitted through a noisy channel, the received signal is corrupted by the AWGN, which adds
random variations to the original signal. This noise can degrade the quality of the received signal and
make it more difficult to accurately extract the transmitted information.

Matched filtering, on the other hand, is a technique used to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and
improve the detection of a known signal in the presence of noise. It is commonly used in communication
systems to recover transmitted signals.

A matched filter is a linear filter whose impulse response is a time-reversed and conjugate complex
version of the transmitted signal. The received signal is passed through this filter, which essentially
correlates the received signal with the expected shape of the transmitted signal. The output of the matched
filter is then processed to make decisions about the presence or absence of the transmitted signal.

The main principle behind matched filtering is that the filter response is maximized when the received
signal matches the expected signal. This is because the correlation between the received signal and the
filter impulse response is maximized when they are aligned. As a result, the matched filter enhances the
signal power while suppressing the noise power, leading to improved detection performance.

In the presence of AWGN, the matched filter maximizes the SNR by exploiting the known characteristics
of the transmitted signal. By maximizing the SNR, the matched filter improves the reliability and
accuracy of signal detection, enabling efficient communication and signal processing in noisy
environments.
