MODULE 4
FORUM 2

JAYSON D. VILLAREAL

1. What conditions led to the emergence of Chinese mestizos as important
members of Philippine society?
Answer:

During the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, Chinese mestizos played a
significant role in shaping Philippine society. They contributed to the country's economy
by engaging in profitable commerce, gathering goods from the north, and selling them
to Manila and nearby provinces. They also controlled the internal trading in the
Philippines while the Spanish mestizos focused on foreign trade. Their ambition and
expertise in trading and commerce helped establish the Philippines' middle class, which
was more active, enterprising, and knowledgeable than the Indios. Apart from their
economic contributions, the Chinese mestizos also played a crucial role in forming
Filipino identity in the latter part of the 19th century.

They started giving opinions regarding the Spanish colonial rule, which the Spaniards
feared might influence the Indios to become more liberal and independent-minded. In
the late 1870s, Pedro Paterno and Gregorio Sanciano wrote about the dignity of the
Filipinos, and they were nurtured by Jose Rizal, who was also a Chinese mestizo. The
Philippine Revolution of 1896 to 1898 was an act of determination by Filipinos and
Chinese mestizos to claim for themselves and future generations the birthright of
nationhood.

2. What were the implications of the Chinese mestizos in Philippine society?

Answer:

The implications of the Chinese mestizos in Philippines society are their power in the
field of the marketing industry. This was and still is the reason why Chinese mestizos
are known and significant here in the Philippines. Their strategies in marketing are one
of a kind for they are also known as good at negotiating in terms of trading. They are the
reason why the export and import of goods in Manila way back then are on top of the
notch compared to other countries.
