Assignment 1 Statistics For Health Science

This document outlines Assignment 1 for the Statistics for Health Science course at VNUHCMC, which consists of four studies related to statistical analysis in health science. Students are required to use statistical software and submit their work by March 27, 2025, with penalties for late submissions. Each study focuses on different health-related statistical problems, including white blood cell analysis, diagnostic test sensitivity, smoking impact on osteoporosis, and HIV latency time.

Statistics for Health Science – School of BME - VNUHCMC

Assignment 1
Statistics for Health Science S2-2024
Instructor: MBmedSc. Nguyen Duong Duc Anh
Maximum Mark: 100 pts. This assignment contributes to 5% of your final grade.

GENERAL INFORMATION
• This is an individual assignment.
• This assignment consists of four studies. Please answer all questions.
• For some questions, you may need to use statistical analysis software including,
but not limited to, R Studio and Microsoft Excel.
• Your answers should include a written explanation of your working processes.
• Submit your answers online in this FORM by 23:59 on Thursday, March 27th, 2025.
Late submissions will be penalized at a rate of 10% maximum points per day.
• Numerical answers should be written with at least 3 significant figures.

STUDY 1 (25 pts)

In diagnosis, the relative abundance of five types of white blood cells is often determined
in a technique called differential counting. The table below details the percentage of each
cell type in a healthy adult person.
Types of white cells Percentage
Basophils 0.5%
Eosinophils 1.5%
Monocytes 4.0%
Lymphocytes 34%
Neutrophils 60%

Assuming a total of 100 white blood cells are found under the microscope in each
sample, answer the following questions:
a. For which cell types can we apply a binomial-to-normal approximation? Why?
(5 pts)
b. Calculate the mean and standard deviation of the number of monocytes being
counted.
(10 pts)
c. Calculate the probability of counting 45 or more lymphocytes in a healthy adult
individual.

STUDY 2 (25 pts)

A new diagnostic method for a rare genetic disease has been found to have a sensitivity
of 95% and specificity of 90%.
a. In every 10,000 people without the disease, how many are expected to be falsely
diagnosed by this method?
(10 pts)
b. Let P be the event of being tested positive, and D be the event of having the
disease. Prove the following equality:
Pr(𝑃|𝐷) Pr⁡(𝐷)
Pr(𝐷|𝑃) =
Pr(𝑃|𝐷) Pr(𝐷) + Pr(𝑃|𝐷′ ) Pr⁡(𝐷′ )
(10 pts)
c. Given that the prevalence of this disease in the population is 1 in 2,000, calculate
the probability that a person who tested positive indeed has this disease.
(5 pts)

STUDY 3 (30 pts)

To investigate the impact of tobacco smoking on osteoporosis, 27 pairs of female twins
were recruited and inquired about their current and previous smoking habits. Bone
mineral density difference between the twins (%) and smoking habit difference (pack-
year, e.g. 1 pack-year means 365 cigarette packs in 1 year) are given in the dataset
BONE.TXT on Blackboard.
a. What type of observational study is this? What is the benefit of comparing
twins?
(5 pts)
b. Calculate the coefficient of variation for smoking habit differences.
(5 pts)
c. Calculate the medians, upper quartiles, and lower quartiles for bone
mineral density and smoking habit differences.
(10 pts)
d. Construct boxplots for mineral density difference and smoking habit
difference using values calculated in (c). Are there any outliers? What would
you do with the outliers?

STUDY 4 (20 pts)

Being infected with HIV does not immediately result in immunodeficiency (i.e. AIDS). The
time between infection and the onset of AIDS is called latency time. In one BME thesis
project, HIV latency time (years) and number of patients are surveyed and given below.:
Latency time (years) Number of patients
2 3
3 5
4 5
5 5
6 7
7 2
8 0
9 1

Assuming latency time follows a normal distribution, please answer the following
questions:
a. Based on a previous large-scale study, we assume the true variance of latency
time in the HIV-infected population to be 3.38. Compute a 95% Confidence
Interval for the mean latency time.
(10 pts)
b. Explain what a 95% Confidence Interval represents.
(5 pts)
c. During the course of the project, unfortunately, the large-scale study is found to
be not reliable. Briefly explain how you would re-calculate your 95% Confidence
Interval. Actual calculation is not needed for this question.
