Finding Mean and Variance of The Sampling Distribution of The Sample Mean

The lesson plan focuses on teaching students how to find the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean. It includes introductory activities, group work, and a detailed procedure for computing these statistics using a specific population. The plan also incorporates assessment and reflection components to evaluate student understanding and teaching effectiveness.

Lesson Plan in Statistics & Probability

Learning Competencies: The learner finds the mean and variance of the sampling
distribution of the sample mean.
Competency Code: M11/12SP – IIId – 5
Content Standard: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of
sampling and sampling distributions of the sample mean.
Performance Standard: The learner is able to apply suitable sampling and sampling
distributions of the sample mean to solve real-life problems in
different disciplines.
Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to find the mean and
variance of the sampling distribution of the sample mean.

I. Procedures
i. Introductory Activities
a. Prayer
b. Housekeeping
c. Checking of Attendance
d. Review
1. What is sampling distribution?
2. How do we determine the number of samples in a given population
with a given sample size?
e. Motivation
Show a picture of histogram for the sampling distribution of the sample
means and let the students describe the picture.
ii. Lesson Proper
a. Activity
The students are divided into 5 groups. Each group will be given
materials for the activity. After performing the activity, let the students
answer the questions that follows. Let the students post their output in
the board and report it to the class. The teacher then process the
group output.
Activity:
Compute the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample means from a population 2, 4, 6, 8, 3 and 5 with a sample size
of 2.
Steps:
1. Compute the mean ( μ ) of the population.
2. Compute the variance (( σ 2 ) of the population.
Follow this steps:
a. Subtract the mean from data in the population. Label this as
X −μ.
b. Square the difference. Label this as ( X −μ )2.
c. Add the results.
d. Divide the total by the number of data in the population.
3. Determine the number of possible samples of size 2.
4. List all possible samples and their corresponding means.
5. Construct the sampling distribution of the sample means.
6. Compute the mean of the sampling distribution of the sample
means. Follow these steps:
a. Multiply the sample mean by the corresponding probability.
b. Add the results.
7. Compute the variance of the sampling distribution of the sample
means. Follow these steps:
a. Subtract the population mean from each sample mean. Label
this as x−μ.
b. Square the difference. Label this as ( x−μ )2.
c. Multiply the results by the corresponding probability. Label this
as P(x )∙ ( x−μ )2.
d. Add the results.

Questions:
1. What is the mean and variance of the population?
2. What is the mean and variance of the sampling distribution of the
sample means?
3. Compare and describe the mean and variance of the sample mean
and the population.
4. What generalization can you give from our activity?
b. Analysis
1. How do you find our activity? Did you encounter any difficulties in
performing our activity? Why?
2. Were you able to answer all the questions in our activity?
3. What insight can you give based on our activity?
c. Abstraction
The teacher discuss the random sampling.
d. Application
The students cite real – life situation where they can apply the concept
of random sampling.
iii. Assessment
In your own words, explain the process of random sampling.
iv. Assignment
Discuss briefly the types of random sampling.

II. Reflection
1. No. of learners who learned 80% in the evaluation:
2. No. of learners who require additional activities for remediation:
3. Did the remedial lessons work? No. of learners who have
caught up with the lesson:
4. No. of learners who continue to require remediation:
5. Which of my learning strategies worked well? Why did these
work?
6. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or supervisor
can help me solve?
7. What innovation or localized materials did I use/discover which I
wish to share with other teachers?
