Problem 1:
A long, rectangular copper bar under a tensile load P hangs from a pin that is supported by two steel
posts (see figure). The copper bar has a length of 2.0 m, a cross-sectional area of 4800 mm2, and a
modulus of elasticity E = 120 GPa. Each steel post has a height of 0.5 m, a cross-sectional area of 4500
mm2, and a modulus of elasticity E = 200 GPa.
(a) Determine the downward displacement 𝛿 of the lower end of the copper bar due to a load P = 180
kN.
(b) What is the maximum permissible load Pmax if the displacement 𝛿 is limited to 1.0 mm?
Problem 2:
A prismatic bar AB of length L, cross-sectional area A, modulus of elasticity E, and weight W hangs vertically
under its own weight (see figure).
(a) Derive a formula for the downward displacement 𝛿𝐶 of point C, located at a distance h from the lower
end of the bar.
(c) What is the ratio b of the elongation of the upper half of the bar to the elongation of the lower half of
the bar?
Problem 3 :
A compression bar having a square cross-section with sides b 5 50 mm is subjected to load P. The bar
is constructed from two pieces of wood that are connected by a glued joint along plane pq that is
inclined at an angle of 𝛼 = 35 deg. The allowable stress in the wood in compression is 11.5 MPa, and
in shear is 4.5 MPa. Also, the allowable stress in the glued joint in compression is 3.5 MPa, and in shear
is 1.25 MPa. Determine the maximum load P that can be applied to the bar.
Problem 4:
A solid circular steel (G = 80 GPa) shaft 1.5 m long transmits 200 kW at a speed of 400 rpm. If the allowable
shearing stress is 70 MPa and the allowable angle of twist is 0.045 rad, determine-
a. The minimum permissible diameter for the shaft.
b. The speed at which this power can be delivered if the shearing stress is not to exceed 50 MPa in a shaft with a
diameter of 75 mm.
Problem 5:
Determine the maximum torque that can be resisted by a hollow circular shaft having an inside diameter of
50 mm and an outside diameter of 90 mm without exceeding a normal stress of 75 MPa (tensile) or a shearing stress
of 80 MPa.
