POKHARA UNIVERSIT Y

Level: Bachelor Semester: Spring Year : 2024

Programme: BE Full Marks: 100
Course: Transportation Engineering II Pass Marks: 45
Time : 3 hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) Explain the methods of parking study. Describe the types of street 3+4
parking with suitable sketches.
b) On crossroads H and F the traffic volume during the design hour was 8
275 and 225 vehicles. The approach speeds were 60 and 45 kmph for
roads H and F. The width of road H is 18 m and that of road F is 12
m. Design the timings of traffic and pedestrian signals.
2. a) Explain traffic capacity, basic capacity, possible capacity, and 7
practicable capacity.
b) Speed observation from a radar speed meter have been taken giving 8
the speeds of the subsidiary streams composing the flow along with
the volume of traffic of each subsidiary stream. Determine the:
i. Speed to check the geometric design
ii. Upper speed limit
iii. Speed causing congestion
iv. Median speed
The readings are as under:
Speed (kmph) Volume of subsidiary stream (veh/hr)

3. a) Calculate the stresses at interior, edge and corner regions of a cement 7
concrete pavement using Westergaard’s stress equation. Use the
following data:
Wheel load= 4100 kg, 𝐸 = 2.1 × 105 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑐𝑚2
Pavement thickness= 20 cm
Poisson’s ratio of concrete= 0.15
Modulus of Subgrade reaction= 2.5 𝑘𝑔/ 𝑐𝑚3
The radius of contact area= 8.91 cm
b) Enlist the factor affecting the design of flexible pavement and rigid 8
pavement. Differentiate between rigid and flexible pavement with
neat sketch.
4. a) A pavement has to be designed for a certain length of existing single 8
lane carriage way road from the following consideration:
• Current traffic of 80kN equivalent single axle load = 1.95x106
ESAL/year
• Design period = 10 years
• Construction period = 18 months from the last traffic count
• Traffic growth rate = 8%
• CBR value of sub-grade soil =5%
• Elastic modulus of asphalt concrete for surface
course = Eac=2500MPa
• Elastic modulus of emulsified stabilized base = Eb=1200MPa
• Elastic modulus of granular sub-base = Esb=120MPa
Draw the cross section of final pavement layers considering the
thickness of asphalt concrete on surface course is not less than
75mm.
OR
Design the flexible pavement for the construction of a new road with
the following data: • Two lane single carriageway is to be designed
in a plain area • Initial traffic in the year of completion of
construction = 310 CVPD (sum of both directions) as mentioned

below:
heavy truck three-axle: 30, heavy truck two axle: 70, mini truck:120,
large bus: 60 and bus: 30
Traffic growth rate = 7.0 %; Design life = 15 years
Design CBR of sub-grade soil = 5%.
Refer attached figure and table for the design.
b) Define prime coat and tack coat. What are the materials required 7
plants and equipment and construction steps for bituminous bound
macadam construction? Explain briefly.
5. a) Write down the function of surface dressing. Explain the construction 8
procedure of Double Bituminous Surface Dressing.
b) Outline the typical failures of rigid and flexible pavement. Explain 7
the term pavement evaluation and design of overlay of highway
pavement.
6. a) What are the various causes of formation of waves and corrugations 7
in flexible pavements suggest remedial measures? List out the
general causes of pavement failures.
b) Enlist the method of tunneling. If you assigned a tunnel engineer, 8
what type of method do you adopt in a firm soil areas?
7. Write short notes on: (Any two) 2×5
a) Green road principles
b) Ideal requirements of Bridge
c) Construction of Otta-seal
