Level: Bachelor Semester: Fall Year : 2024

Programme: BE Full Marks : 100
Course: Data Communication Pass Marks : 45
Time : 3 hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.
1. a) Explain the block diagram of a data communication system with 8
reference to its core components. Compare digital and analog data
transmission in terms of signal processing, error handling, and
bandwidth.
b) Define Baud rate. An analog signal has a bit rate of 800 bps and a baud 7
rate of 1000 baud. How many data elements are carried by each signal
element? How many signal elements do we need?
2. a) Differentiate between energy and power signal with example. Justify 7
whether x(t) = e-a|t| , a>0 is energy or power signal.
b) Find the Fourier series coefficient for the given signals: 8
𝜋
x(t)=4+sin(𝜔𝑡) + 2 cos(2𝜔𝑡) + cos(2𝜔𝑡 + ) and also plot
4
magnitude and phase spectrum.
3. a) Define signum signal and unit impulse signal. Find the Fourier 8
Transform of Signum signal and unit step signal.
b) Explain the concept of a protocol stack. Compare the TCP/IP and OSI 7
models with respect to their approach to organizing communication
protocols.
4. a) What are guided and unguided transmission media? Discuss the 7
advantages of fiber optic over other guided media.
b) A bit stream 1101011011 is transmitted using the cyclic redundancy 8
check (CRC) method. The generator polynomial is 𝑥 4 + 𝑥 + 1 .
Determine the transmitted codeword.
5. a) Explain how sender-receiver synchronization issues are addressed in 8
the sliding window protocol, focusing on Selective Repeat
mechanisms. Discuss their advantages, disadvantages, and how they
ensure reliable data transmission in high-speed networks.

b) Explain the significance of switching? Also, Explain FDM hierarchy 7
in telephone system.
6. a) Represent the given sequence of bits 10110100 using 7
i. Unipolar Nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)
ii. Polar NRZ
iii. Bipolar encoding
iv. Manchester encoding
b) Differentiate Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation 8
(PM). Why is FM superior over AM in communication?
7. Write short notes on: (Any two) 2×5
a) Satellite Communication
b) Analog Hierarchy
c) QPSK Modem
