INSTRUCTION: – Read the passage below and answer the questions that follows.

We all have serious personal problems at some time in our lives and can be dealt with fairly easily,
especially if counseling is available. Counselors are trained professionals who are there to advise and
assist. Some churches have priests or pastors who are professionally equipped for this role. Very little
that you can say to them will surprise them: they have seen and heard it all, and have the greatest
problems. You can trust them; whatever you say to them remains confidential.

Many young people have problems of one kind or another that cause great stress. The problems typically
fall into three categories –home, school and relationships.
Problems at home can involve sibling rivalries, financial problems, and physical or emotional abuse of
various kinds. At school, most problems arise from stress related to studies and examinations, to bullying.
Relationship problems take many different forms: they can also involve problems relating to making and
keeping friends, and disagreements and misunderstandings. Some of the problems may centre on
relationship with the opposite sex, such as a boyfriend who is too demanding, or injection by a girlfriend.
There is one other problem we should also mention medical problems. Again, nothing you do or say is
likely to surprise a doctor as they to have seen and heard it all. Again, everything you say remains
confidential. For example, if you have an STD – a sexually transmitted disease, you should not hesitate to
go to a doctor. It may be embarrassing, but it is better to be embarrassed than suffer.

If you find out that you have HIV, you may find it difficult to deal with the information and in deciding
who to tell. You may suffer from changes in mood, which can be difficult to cope with alone. You may
find it useful to obtain not just medical help, but also counseling. Remember, whatever your problem a
problem shared is a problem solved

1. Who are counselors?

2. What are then categories of problems faced by young people?
3. Explain in one sentence the problem faced by young people in schools
4. Who should a person with STD visit and why?
5. What do you understand from the final passage in the last two lines?
