Unit 2 Day 4 Notes - Triangle Congruence

The document provides an introduction to triangle congruence, defining congruent triangles as those with all corresponding angles and sides congruent. It outlines the various triangle congruence theorems, including SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, and HL, and explains the concepts of included sides and angles. Additionally, it includes practice exercises for determining triangle congruence using the appropriate theorems.

Day 3—Introduction to Triangle Congruence

Two triangles are congruent to each other if ALL corresponding angles and sides are
congruent. Corresponding parts of triangles are the parts of the triangles that “match.”

Example: If RST  XYZ , identify all pairs of congruent corresponding parts. Draw a picture
and label the congruent angles and sides.

Triangle Congruence Theorems

Side – Side – Side (SSS) Side – Angle – Side (SAS)

Congruence Theorem Congruence Theorem

three sides of one triangle are congruent two sides and the included angle of one
to three sides of a second triangle triangle are congruent to two sides and
the included angle of a second triangle

Angle – Side – Angle (ASA) Angle – Angle – Side (AAS)

Congruence Theorem Congruence Theorem

two angles and the included side of one two angles and a non-included side of one
triangle are congruent to two angles and triangle are congruent to two angles and a
the included side of a second triangle non-included side of a second triangle

Hypotenuse – Leg (HL) Congruence Theorem (RIGHT TRIANGLES ONLY!)

In a right triangle, the hypotenuse and one

leg is congruent to the hypotenuse and leg
of another right triangle

Practice: Mark the included side in each triangle Practice: Mark the included angle in each triangle.

ONLY Markings You Are Allowed to Add

Share a Side Vertical Angles

Reason: Reflexive Property Reason: Vertical Angles are Congruent

***If the triangles are not touching, you are NOT allowed to add ANYTHING!!***

Using everything we have learned so far, add a marking using either the Reflexive Property or Vertical Angles.
Then state how the triangles are congruent.

Practice: Determine whether there is enough information to say the triangles are congruent.
If so, state the congruence theorem (SSS, SAS, ASA, AAS, HL). If not, write “not congruent.”
Remember, the ONLY markings you can add to a picture are
VERTICAL ANGLES or a REFLEXIVE SIDE.
