NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROURKELA

MID - TERM EXAMINATION, 2024

SESSION: 2023 – 24 (Spring)
B. Tech. 8th. Semester

Subject code: ID4306 Subject Name: Design for Manufacturing and Assembly Dept. Code: ID
No. of pages: 01 Full Marks: 30 Duration: 2 Hrs

Answer all the Questions

Q. No. Particulars Marks

1. a) Highlight the differences and similarities between design for assembly (DFA) and design [2]
for manufacturing (DFM).
b) Explain the importance of implementing DFMA in product design? [2]

c) Explain the methods for material selection by synthesis and by similarity techniques with [2]
suitable diagrams.
d) Highlight the major advantages and limitations of metal-forming processes over other [2]
manufacturing processes during the course of DFMA.
e) What is the need of providing flash in the die of forging operation? Explain with the help of [2]
a neat sketch.
2. Explain various approaches for implementation of concurrent engineering in product design [4]
and manufacturing.
3. What are the major principles in design for assembly (DFA)? Explain with proper sketch and [4]
highlight its importance in DFMA.
4. In a wire drawing operation, diameter of 8 mm is reduced in stages to a diameter of 2 mm, [4]
assuming ideal rigid plastic material and ideal lubricant condition. Estimate the minimum
number of passes required, by assuming maximum reduction per pass is obtained with μ=0.2,
flow strength of the material 80 MPa and half die angle as 8°.
5. Explain the need of advance joining techniques over conventional techniques for various [4]
critical applications like aerospace and aircraft industries.

6. A round steel billet of 100 mm length and 60 mm diameter is extruded by using a direct [4]
extrusion process. Considering an ideal deformation process (no friction and no redundant
work), with extrusion ratio as 4 and flow stress as 270 MPa, calculate the extrusion pressure
acting on the RAM during the forming process.
