Hydraulics
Hydraulics includes the study and analysis of fluids when in motion and stationary. The part of Hydraulics
which deals with the study of static behavior and interaction of fluids is called as Hydrostatics; the part
dealing with fluid in motion is called Hydrodynamics. In Civil Engineering Hydraulics we study fluid
properties and behavior in different civil engineering applications, such as, flow of water through canals
for irrigation, flow through public supply pipelines and water drainage system. We also study the effect
of static fluid, such as, the pressure and force exerted by water stored in dams on its walls.

Water Resources and Irrigation Engineering

Water Resource Engineering is a specific kind of civil engineering that involves the design of new
systems and equipment that help manage human water resources. Some of the areas Water Resource
Engineers touch on are water treatment facilities, underground wells, and natural springs.
A water resource engineer may entail charting out a community's water needs and frequently analyzing
water resources. They are also responsible for designing treatment plants, supply systems, pipelines and
pump systems to effectively manage wastewater for both private and public consumption.
Irrigation may be defined as the process of artificially supplying water to soil for raising crops.
The engineering of controlling and harnessing the various natural sources of water, by construction of
dam and reservoirs, canals and headwork and finally distributing the water to the agriculture fields is
called as irrigation engineering. India is basically an agricultural country, and all its resources depend on
the agriculture output. Water is evidently the most vital element and is normally supplied to the plants by
nature through rains. In order to get maximum yield, it is essential to supply the optimum quantity of
water, and to maintain correct timing of water. This is possible only through a systematic irrigation system
by collecting water during the period of excess rainfall and releasing it to the crop as and when it is
needed. The necessity of irrigation depends upon the intensity of rainfall, type and frequency of growing
crops during a year and control of water supply.

Environmental and Sanitary Engineering

Sanitary engineering, also known as public health engineering or wastewater engineering, is the
application of engineering methods to improve sanitation of human communities, primarily by providing
the removal and disposal of human waste, and in addition to the supply of safe potable water. It is the
branch of public health engineering dealing with collection, conveyance, treatment and disposal of wastes
(garbage, sullage, sewage). The main purpose of sanitary engineering is to maintain such environment as
will not affect the public health in general.
Environmental engineering provides methods and facilities for wastewater management, water and air
purification, waste disposal and recycling, and other purposes pertaining to human health and benefit. An
environmental sanitation engineer performs research and implements methods of treating, preventing,
remediating, and controlling environmental hazards related to waste management. Waste management
includes the management of water, solid waste, industrial waste and other pollutants.
