Tutorial 1

The document outlines a tutorial for EET 4116 Power Stations, presenting various problems related to calculating demand factors, load factors, and energy production for different power station scenarios. It includes calculations for connected loads, load curves, and the sizing of generator units based on maximum demands and load schedules. Additionally, it addresses factors such as reserve capacity and annual energy production for power plants.

EET 4116 Power Stations

Tutorial #1

1. Residence has the following connected load: three 60-W lamps; ten 40-W lamps; four
100 lamps and five 10-W lamps. Maximum demand (for 30 min. interval) is 650 W,
calculate the demand factor.

2. A power station supplies the following loads to the consumers:

Time in hours 0-6 6-10 10-12 12-16 16-20 20-22 22-24

Load in MW 30 70 90 60 100 80 60
(i) Draw the load curve and estimate the load factor of the plant
(ii) What is the load factor of a standby equipment of 30 MW capacity if it takes
up all loads above 70 MW?
(iii) Draw the load duration curve and estimate the peak and base loads.

3. A generating Station has a connected load of 43,000 kW and a maximum demand of

20,000 kW, the units generated being 61,500,000 for the year. Calculate the load
factor and demand factor for this case.

4. A consumer has the following load-schedule for a day

From midnight to 6 a.m. = 200 W; from 6 a.m. to 12 noon = 3000 W
From 12 noon to 1 p.m. = 2000 W; from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. = 4000 W
From 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. = 3000 W; from 9 p.m. to midnight = 1000 W
Find the load factor.

5. A power plant has the following annual factors: load factor = 0.75, capacity factor =
0.60. Maximum demand is 60 MW. Use factor = 0.65. Estimate(i) the annual energy
production, (ii) the reserve capacity over and above the peak load, and the (iii) the
hours during which the plant is not in service per year.

6. A generating station has a maximum demand of 10,000 kW and the daily load on the
station as follows:
KW kW
11 p.m. to 6 a.m. 2,000 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. 7,500
6 a.m. to 8 a.m. 3,500 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. 8,500
8 a.m. to 12 noon 8,000 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. 10,000
12 noon to 1 p.m. 3,000 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. 4,500
Choose the size and number of generator units. What reserve plant would be
necessary? Find the load factor; plant capacity factor and plant use factor of the
station? Also draw up the operating schedule. Calculate the daily fuel requirement if
the calorific value of the oil used is 10,000 kcal/kg and the average heat rate of the
station is 2,860 kcal/kWh.
7. A power station is supplying power to six regions of load whose maximum demands
are 90 MW, 50 MW, 100 MW, 80 MW, 60 MW and 70 MW. The diversity factor of
the station is 1.5 and the average annual load factor is 0.65. Calculate the maximum
demand on the station and the total annual energy supplied by the station. Suggest the
installed capacity of the generators taking 50% future growth.

8. A 300 MW thermal power station is to supply power to a system having maximum

and minimum demand of 240 MW and 180 MW respectively in a year. Assume the
load duration curve to be a straight line, estimate (a) load factor and (b) capacity
factor.
