Assignment 4

The document defines and distinguishes between evaluation, assessment, and measurement in the context of education. Evaluation involves making judgments about the quality of instruction and student learning, assessment is the process of collecting information on student knowledge and skills, and measurement assigns numerical values to specific attributes. The relationships among these terms highlight that measurement provides data for assessment, which in turn informs evaluation.

State definitions for the following terms and identify examples of each: evaluation,
assessment, and measurement.

1. In your own words, explain the meanings of the following terms so that their
differences and relationships are clear:
a. evaluation:
b. assessment:
c. measurement:

Following are definitions and examples from the sources:

Evaluation is the methodical process of coming up with judgments regarding the

quality or value of instruction and student learning. It entails interpretation and
coming up with value judgments from the data gathered through the utilization of
various measurement and assessment methods.

Example: Scoring a 50-question psychology class test in which students who answer
40 or more questions correctly demonstrate satisfactory understanding of the
instructional goals. Another example is assessing whether a student has learned the
concepts of positive and negative reinforcement and intellectual capacities from test
data.

Assessment is a general term that includes the various processes utilized to collect
information on students' learning. It involves a variety of data collection methods on
students' knowledge, skills, and comprehension. Assessment can be formal or
informal and may include tests, observations, projects, and other approaches.

Examples involve giving tests to determine learners' understanding of a given unit.

Observing students while they participate in group activities as a class. Asking
students to prepare and present examples of positive and negative reinforcement.
Collecting quantitative data through tests and qualitative information using
observational methods to determine if learning objectives have been achieved. Using
assignments created by instructors to test students' understanding of behavioral
concepts.

Measurement is the process of assigning or allocating numerical values to particular

attributes or characteristics. It typically entails the utilization of equipment or
techniques for acquiring numerical values.

Examples are measuring a student's performance on a test (e.g., giving an 80 of 100

score). Using a rubric to assign a numerical evaluation to multiple aspects of a
student's project. Measuring a student's weight or height. Counting the number of
words spelled correctly in a sample of writing.
In your own words:
Assessment can be described as the process of making a comprehensive judgment or
conclusion of the quality or value of a particular entity, in this case, instructional
quality or student achievement. It seeks to provide an answer to the question, "How
satisfactory is it?" and typically entails comparison of the data gathered with
established standards or criteria.
b.Assessment is the systematic process of gathering data or evidence about students'
knowledge, comprehension, and skills. It is akin to putting together pieces of a jigsaw
that build up to form a comprehensive picture of what they have learned. In order to
obtain this information, assessment employs an array of instruments and methods.
c. Measurement may be described as the assignment of a score or a number to a
specific trait or level of performance. It makes the quantification of learning or sets of
skills possible. One may think of it as taking a snapshot of a given aspect of learning
using a specified instrument to arrive at a numerical result.
Relationships and Differences

Measurement furnishes information required by the evaluation process. Specifically,

measurement furnishes explicit numerical data or scores that constitute part of the
overall evaluation process. For instance, a test score (measurement) is utilized to
quantify the knowledge of a student (assessment).

Assessment yields information critical to evaluation processes. Information garnered

through the use of different types of assessment approaches, such as measurement, is
then analyzed and used to render judgment or evaluation on student learning or
effectiveness of instructional methods. For example, an examination of a student's test
scores, participation in class discussion, and completion of work (assessment) enables
an instructor to determine if the learner has achieved learning outcomes outlined in
the unit (evaluation).

Measurement is the most technical and frequently numerical, concerned with

measuring attributes. Assessment is more general, consisting of collection and
interpretation of data of all kinds. Evaluation is the most general, consisting of
making judgments and decisions based on the information collected through
assessment and measurement.
Essentially, we measure specific dimensions, assess the overall learning process by
gathering various data points, and then judge the value or quality of that learning
based on the assessment data and measurements derived.
