Grading System:

The following will be utilized for computation of the final grade at the end of the semester.

Test: A test will be conducted within the semester. The schedule for the test are below:

Please note: The tests are close book. You might be interested in using calculator for your

Homework: Problem Sets will be handed. Late submission will not be entertained except in
genuine cases that will be verified for reasonability. The marks for the problem sets are
summative towards the final grade.

MEE 303 Fluid Mechanics I Harmattan Semester 2023/24

Lab Sessions/Design Project: Laboratory sessions will hold weekly through the Semester. All
Departmental representatives should make necessary arrangements for their schedule at the
Mechanical Engineering Laboratory.

Attendance: All students are required to attend all lectures. The attendance will be 5% of the
final grade. Only sick students with sick leave report from the University health center will be
considered allowed to skip a class.

Final Exam: The examination time tables including University approved venues will be made
available by the Deputy Registrar exams & Records.

The summative nature of the final grade is as shown below:

Course description:

This course is intended to explore fundamentals in fluid mechanics as applicable to application in


Engineering.

Learning outcomes:

Students at the end of the course should be able to:

 Understand basic principles of fluid flow.


 Understand basic fluid properties, governing equations, etc.
 Analyze & apply knowledge to fluid problems.
 Troubleshoot typical industrial fluid problems.
 Design, construct and test simple fluid devices.

2 The Fluid as a continuum. Physical properties. Dimensions, units and
constants
2 Fluid Statics: Equilibrium of fluid at rest
3 Thrusts on plane surfaces
3 Buoyancy and thrusts on curved surfaces
4 Integral Analysis: Control volume and mass conversation

4 Continuity Equation in one-dimensional flow


5&6 Incompressible Flow: Basic principles, pressure at a point in a moving fluid.
Bernoulli’s equation
Elementary consideration of viscous fluids
Dimensional Analysis: The pi-theorem
Typical non-dimensional parameters
Dynamic similarity and models. Flow in pipes: Entry conditions
The boundary layer concept. Laminar and turbulent flows.
Transition. Pressure losses in bends, sudden changes of section, pipe fittings
and valves
Diffusers, nozzles, branched pipes and systems
Practical & Design Project

advice on your project work; however, your answers must be written out and submitted
independently. All test and exams will be completed alone, without books, notes, or other aids.
In order for full participation and engagement during class, electronic devices such as computers,
tablets and cellphones must be turned off. This code of conducts are enacted to ensure a
