Write up:

On January 25, 2025, we organized a comprehensive workshop titled "Interfacing

Microcontrollers with MATLAB Simulink." The workshop was designed to provide participants
with an in-depth understanding of integrating simulation environments with embedded
microcontroller systems, focusing on real-time data simulation and communication with
microcontrollers like the ESP32.
The session began with a brief introduction to MATLAB Simulink, explaining its role as a
powerful simulation tool for modeling and simulating systems, especially in the context of signal
processing, control systems, and embedded applications. Participants were shown how to use
Simulink to generate simulated input signals, such as temperature, pressure, and speed, through
various blocks like Signal Generators and Constant blocks. These signals were crucial for simulating
real-world data that could be used in microcontroller applications, such as IoT devices.
Next, we delved into the ESP32 microcontroller, which is widely used in IoT and embedded
systems due to its low-cost, high-performance capabilities, and support for various communication

protocols. The participants were introduced to the microcontroller’s features, including its built-in
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, making it an ideal choice for real-time data acquisition and cloud
integration.
A major part of the workshop was dedicated to establishing communication between Simulink
and the ESP32 using UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter). This involved setting
up the hardware and software to enable data transmission from Simulink to the microcontroller.
Participants learned how to configure Simulink for serial communication, ensuring smooth data
transfer to the ESP32. The simulated data, which included various vehicle parameters like
temperature and pressure, was then transmitted via UART to the microcontroller for further
processing or visualization.
A live demonstration followed, where the participants could observe the entire process from
simulation to hardware communication. The ESP32 received data from Simulink, and we
demonstrated how this data could be visualized on a dashboard, offering real-time monitoring of the
simulated parameters. This hands-on approach allowed the participants to see how data flows
seamlessly from a simulation environment into a microcontroller-based system.
