Assignment_3
Classical Mechanics
B. Math., 2nd Year, July - November 2024,
Due date: October 14th, 2024 (Monday)
Provide arguments for steps which are not obvious. Any result written down
without explanations will receive zero credit. Feel free to discuss assignments
with one another, but any assignment directly copied from another will result in
zero points for both students involved. Not all questions may be graded. How-
ever, Question 2 will definitely be part of your grade. PLEASE REMEM-
BER TO WRITE YOUR NAME AND ROLL NUMBER CLEARLY
IN BLOCK LETTERS ON THE FIRST PAGE.

2. Imagine a particle
that moves in a central potential given by V (r) =
−V0 exp −k 2 r2 . V0 > 0.
(a) Find the radius r0 of the stable circular orbit implicitly as a solution
of an invertible equation. You do not have to explicitly invert it.
(b) For too large an L, there can be no circular orbit. Show, by plotting
Veff vs r, the above claim is true.
(c) Find Lmax for which a circular orbit in fact exists.
5 + 4 + 6 = 15 points
3. Imagine a uniform solid cylinder of radius R and total mass M that lies
on an inclined plane of angle θ (the plane is, from side view, in the form
of a right-angled triangle, with the hypotenuse being the inclined plane,
one side lying flat along ground and the other side vertical). A string is
wrapped around the cylinder which passes over a pulley (massless, fric-
tionless) across the vertical angle. The string is parallel to the inclined
plane and a mass m hangs parallel to the vertical side from the same string
after it passes over the pulley. Assume the cylinder rolls without slipping
on the plane. Find the acceleration of the mass m.

4. Classical Mechanics, Goldstein, Safko and Poole, Edition 3, Derivation
4.15. This expresses the components of the angular velocity vector along
the space-set of axes in terms of the Euler angles (the same for the body-
set of axes will be discussed in class).
