13. Which of the following is a soft copy and a hard copy?
(a) Output on a monitor (b) Output on a printer
(a) soft copy (b) hard copy
14. What role do Input unit and Output unit play in a computer system?
An input unit allows users to input data and instructions into the computer system into
a format that the computer can understand and process. It includes input devices, such
as keyboards, mice, touchscreens, scanners, and microphones.
An output unit allows the computer system to present processed data and information
to the user in a human-readable form such as text, graphics, sound, or video. It includes
output devices, such as monitors, printers, speakers, and projectors.
15. What role does the memory play in the functioning of a computer system?
(a) Program execution (b) Data Storage
(c) Multitasking (d) Caching
(e) Virtual Memory
16. Discuss two popular input devices.
(a) The Keyboard: is a typewriter like device which is used to type in the letters, digits,
and commands.
(b) The Mouse: is a pointing device that points to a position on the screen. It controls the
movement of the pointer on screen.
17. What is a pointing device? Name a popular pointing device.
A pointing device is a hardware device that allows users to interact with graphical user
interfaces (GUIs) by moving a cursor or pointer on the screen and selecting objects.
Pointing devices are commonly used to navigate menus, click buttons, drag, and drop
items, and perform other actions in software applications.
One popular pointing device is the computer mouse.
18. When is a scanner used for input? Discuss various types of scanners.
A scanner creates an electronic form of the printed image, which can later manipulate,
change, and modify according to the requirements.
Types of scanners:
(a) Flatbed scanner (b) Sheet-fed scanner
(c) Handheld scanner (d) Drum scanner
19. Discuss the functioning of a light pen.
A light-sensitive input device shaped like a pen, used to draw on the computer screen or
to make menu selections.
20. When is a bar code reader used for input and how?
A bar code reader is used to read barcodes which can be found on products in shops. The
barcode uses lasers to identify the position and thickness of the bars.
21. Discuss various storage units.
(a) Primary Storage: Read Only Memory (ROM) and Random Access Memory (RAM).
(b) Secondary Storage: Hard Disks, Compact Disks, Thumb/Pen Drives, Memory Stick.
22. There are two types of internal memory in a computer system. Name and discuss
them.
(a) Read Only Memory (ROM): in this memory, information once stored remains fixed. So,
ROM can only be read and used; it cannot be changed or written onto.
(b) Random Access Memory (RAM): the internal memory that can be read from as well as
written to. It is volatile, i.e. its contents are lost when power is turned off.
23. Compare and contrast internal memory and external memory.
Internal Memory External Memory
Location Located inside the computer Located outside the CPU and
system’s CPU or on motherboard. motherboard.
Accessibility Fast access speed. Slower than internal memory.
Volatility Is volatile. Can be volatile or non-volatile.
Purpose Temporary storage. Permanent storage.
Portability Is fixed and not portable. Is portable.
24. Why is auxiliary memory required?
Auxiliary memory, also known as Secondary or External memory, can store data/files for
later use i.e. permanently.
25. Discuss the usage of hard disks.
The hard disk memories store information on one or more circular platters (or disks) of
magnetic material which are continuously spinning. Information is recorded on the
surface of rotating disks by magnetic heads as tiny magnetic spots.
26. What are peripheral devices? Name some.
A peripheral device is any external device that provides input and output for the
computer.
Some peripheral devices are:
(a) Input devices – Mouse, Keyboard, Scanner.
(b) Output devices – Printer, Monitor, Speaker.
(c) Storage devices – Hard Disk Drive, Pen Drive, Memory Card.
27. Each piece of hardware in the table below is either an input, output, or storage
device. For each, put a tick in the correct box. As an example, a keyboard is an input
device so a tick is placed in the Input column. Tick one box only for each device.
S. No. Device Input Output Storage
(i) Keyboard
(ii) CD-ROM drive
(iii) Hard disk drive
(iv) Printer
(v) Light pen
(vi) Monitor
(vii) RAM

28. Some storage devices have volatile memory. Explain what is meant by the term
volatile.
The term "volatile" refers to a type of memory that loses its stored data when power is
removed or turned off. In other words, volatile memory requires a continuous power
supply to retain its contents. When the power is turned off, the data stored in volatile
memory is erased or lost.
29. A veterinary surgery is going to install a new computer system. The vets must choose
suitable hardware to use in their practice.
(a) Give three input devices that would be suitable for use in their practice.
(a) Keyboard, Barcode scanner, Digital camera.
(b) Give three output devices that would be suitable for use in their practice.
(b) Monitor, Printer, Speakers.
(c) Give three storage devices that would be suitable for use in their practice.
(c) Hard Disk Drive, Cloud storage, Pen/Thumb Drives.
