The document presents three engineering problems involving the analysis of structural components under load. Problem 1 focuses on determining the polar moment of inertia, maximum load capacity, and torsional load on a bracket connection with eccentric loading. Problems 2 and 3 involve calculating shear stresses and resultant forces on welds and bolts in various configurations under specified loads.

PROBLEM 1: The bracket connection shown carries an eccentric

load P at an eccentricity e= 400 mm. The column and bracket are

A36 steel. Diameter of bolt is 22mm in standard holes. Assume
that the column flanges an bracket are thick enough that single
shear in bolts will control. Shear capacity of one bolt is 45
KN.
a) Determine the polar moment of inertia.
b) Determine the maximum load P that can be supported by the
bracket shown.
c) Determine the torsional load on the critical bolt.

PROBLEM 2: A W 470 × 105 kg/m beam of 12-mm web

thickness is spliced near the support using a 15-mm
thick connector plate welded to part B and bolted using
20-mm θ A325 bolts to point A.
Dimensions:
S1 = 40 mm S3 = 80 mm
S2 = 40 mm S4 = 100 mm
S5 = 40 mm
Steel strength and allowable stresses are as follows:
Yield stress, Fy = 248 MPa
Bolt shear stress, Fv = 120 MPa
The load P acts an eccentricity e = 180 mm from the
centroid of the bolt
group. If P = 200 kN,
a. Determine the shear load, in kN, on the critical bolt.
b. Determine the torsional load, in kN, on the critical bolt.
c. Determine the stress, in MPa, on the most stressed bolt.
d. Based on the allowable bolt shear stress, determine the maximum force P that can
be applied.

PROBLEM 3: Given:
Force, P = 200 kN
Weld thickness, t = 10 mm, a = 250 mm, b = 120 mm, c = 250 mm
a. Compute the shear stress of the weld at A.
b. Compute the shear stress of the weld at B.
c. Compute the shear stress of the weld at C.

PROBLEM 3: Given:
Force, P = 360 kN
Allowable weld stress, Fvw = 93 MPa
a = 200 mm
b = 500 mm

a. Calculate the resultant force per unit length of

weld (N/mm) if a = 0.
b. Calculate the resultant force per unit length of
weld (N/mm) due to eccentric load.
c. The resultant force per unit length of weld
(N/mm) is 750 N/mm, find the required weld
thickness.
