OVERVIEW
Like a debate, a position paper presents one side of an arguable opinion about an
issue. The goal of a position paper is to convince the audience that our opinion is valid
and defensible. Ideas that you are considering need to be carefully examined in

important that you are addressing all sides of the issue and presenting it in a manner
that is easy for your audience to understand.

Position paper is an essay that describes someone’s detailed position or

opinion on a topic or issue. The purpose of a position paper is to generate support
on an issue.
To write a position paper, like all other essays that we do, it has three parts
—introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction clearly identifies the issue
and states the author’s position. The body may contain several paragraphs. Each
paragraph should present an idea or main concept that clarifies your position and
is supported by evidence or facts. It should incorporate both sides of the issue. The
conclusion should summarize the main concepts and ideas. It could include
suggested courses of action and possible solutions.

I. Introduction
 identification of the issue
 statement of the position
II. Body
 background information
 supporting evidence or facts
 discussion of both sides of the issue
III. Conclusion
 summary of main concepts
 suggested courses of action
 possible solutions
