D- no I don’t believe it, unless our daughter been lying about her age

Leon- the match was doomed from the start- when young sophia’s father learned that
young kasimir was illiterate, he forbade sophia to see young Kasimir ever again . 6 months later,
she married a young student, and that winter, Kasimir, distraught, took his own life by plowing his

Lenya- next time don’t mention his name!

Leon- So and so, sometimes known as a sorcerer, Because of his ability to summon up
powers of the devil himself, brought all upon the village of Kulyenchikov.

Dr- here it comes , here it comes!

Mikail Zubritsky, murderer of my only son, be struck down by the ignorance that what caused my
son’s death. May stupidity engulf her brain, may incompetence encumber her faculties, May
common sense become uncommon and may reason become unreasonable. May all their children be
cursed as well. And may all their children be cursed for eternity. Let all who are born in Kulyenchikov
be born in ignorance and die in ignorance, unable to leave this accursed village. Until my final
vengeance is satisfied.

Lenya- that would explain why the train doesn’t stop here.
Leon- (To audience) My initial impulse was to panic. Even my secondary impulse is to
panic. To educate is one thing, But to break curses is another.

D- excuse me, but are you all right, master Tolchinsky?

Leon- yes, I’m fine, I was just thinking.

D- Lenya! He was thinking!

Lenya- he was thinking!

D- what’s it like?

Leon- you mean you don’t know what thinking is?

D- I don’t and she certainly doesn’t

Leon- Thinking, well. It’s the thoughts that come to one’s mind, it’s the process that
enables us to make decisions.

D_ decisions? no, I don’t think we are capable of that.

Leon- but surely you know what it is you want!

Lenya- Dear God yes! What we desperately want is for someone to help us. Not so much for
ourselves, we’ve already lived our lives. But for our child. For our dear, sweet Sophia!

Leon- did you hear what you just said?

LEON: Doctor Zubritsky, Mrs. Zubritsky- I am now more
