Tutorial 2: Electric field, Electric force, Continuous charge distribution, Gauss’ law

[II.1] Consider a thin ring of radius r, carrying a positive charge 𝑄 > 0 uniformly distributed along its
length. The ring is placed on the yz-plane with the x-axis being its central axis
a) Find the expression of the electric field created by the ring at a point on the central axis of
the ring with coordinate x.
Consider a disk of radius R, centered on O and with a uniform surface charge density σ>0.
b) Find the expression of the electric field created by a disk of radius R with a uniform
surface charge density σ>0, at a point M that lies along the central perpendicular axis of
the disk (Ox) with coordinate x.
c) Find the expression of the field, when considering R to be infinite.
d) Consider an infinitely large plan, with a uniform surface charge density σ>0, with a
circular hole centered on O and with radius R.
Use the previous results to find the electric field at a point M on the axis (Ox) of the hole.

[II.2] A uniformly charged insulating rod of length 14.0cm is bent into the shape of a semicircle
(figure 2-a). The rod has a total charge of -7.50μC.
a) Find the magnitude and direction of the electric field at the center O of the semicircle.
b) What if the rod is bent into three quarters of a circle (Figure 2-b)?

Figure II.2-a Figure II.2-b

[II.3] A closed surface with dimensions a=b=0.400m and c = 0.600

m is located as in figure.II.6. The left edge of the closed
surface is located at position x = a. The electric field
throughout the region is nonuniform and given by
𝐸⃗ = (3.0 + 2.0𝑥 2 )𝑖̂ 𝑁/𝐶
where x is in meters.

a) Calculate the net flux leaving the closed surface.

b) What net charge is enclosed by the surface?

[II.4] A solid insulating sphere of radius a has a uniform charge density ρ

and a total charge Q. Concentric with this sphere is an uncharged
conducting hollow sphere whose inner and outer radii are b and c,
as shown in figure II.3.
a) Find the magnitude of the electric field in the regions r<a,
a<r<b, b<r<c and r>c.
b) Determine the induced charge per unit area on the inner and
outer surfaces of the hollow sphere.
[II.5] Consider a very long coaxial cable of length L, shown in figure II.5 below, under electrostatic
conditions. Assume that the central conducting wire has a total charge +Q0 and the outer
copper tube has a total charge of –Q0, both uniformly distributed along the length L of the cable.

a) Use Gauss’ law to explain where the charge +Q0 is located on the central wire, and find
an expression for the charge density, in terms of Q0 and the parameters given in the
diagram.
b) Use Gauss’ law to explain where the charge -Q0 is located on the outer copper tube, and
find an expression for the charge density, in terms of Q0 and the parameters given in the
diagram.
c) Determine the electric field between the central wire and the outer tube (a<r<b). Check
that at r=a and r=b these expressions reduce to the well-known results of the electric
field just outside the surface of a charged conductor.

Additional Exercises:

[II.6] Two identical thin rods of length 2a carry charges +Q uniformly distributed along their lengths.
The rods lie along the x-axis with their centers separated by a distance b>2a.

Figure II.1
Show that the vector force exerted by the left rod on the right one is given by:
𝑄2 𝑏2
𝐹= ln ( 2 ) 𝑖̂
16𝜋𝜀0 𝑎2 𝑏 − 4𝑎2

[II.7] Find an expression for the electric field created by a volume charge density ρ>0 uniformly
distributed between two coaxial and infinitely long cylinders with radii R1 and R2 respectively
(R1<R2).

[II.8] A sphere of radius 2a is made of a nonconducting material that has a

uniform volume charge density ρ. (Assume that the material does not
affect the electric field.) A spherical cavity of radius a, is now removed
from the sphere, as shown in figure.II.4. Show that the electric field
𝜌𝑎
within the cavity is uniform and is given by 𝐸𝑥 = 0 and 𝐸𝑦 = 3𝜖 .
