Power System Analysis

Experiment 2: Measurement ABCD Parameters for Medium

Transmission Line
Aim: Measurement of ABCD parameters of a medium transmission line with magnitude and
angle

Apparatus: Transmission line training system, connecting chords, tester etc.

Pre Lab:
1. What distinguishes a medium transmission line from short and long transmission lines?
2. What assumptions are made while deriving the ABCD parameters of a medium
transmission line?

Theory:
Transmission lines having length from 80 km to 160 km and operating voltage from 20 kV to 100
kV is known as medium transmission lines. The performance of the medium transmission line
depends upon the resistance, inductance, and, capacitance of the line.
Derivation of ABCD parameters for medium transmission line: with T network

Procedure:
1) Open Circuit the Output Terminal Procedure:
i) The AC supply is off and variac knob is at zero position
ii) Make the connection according to the circuit diagram.
iii) Measure the Sending end (Is), Receiving end (IR) current, Sending end voltage (Vs),
and Receiving end voltage (VR) respectively with the help of switch S1,S2,S3
S1 Switch: Simultaneously get sending end and receiving end voltage, current, active, reactive,
apparent power and power factor. S2 Switch: get sending end and receiving end active, reactive,
apparent power. S3 Switch: get sending end and receiving end voltage, current, and power factor.
iv) After completion of the entire connection, connect the main cord to the panel &
switch on the power supply.

v) With the help of variac adjust the voltage up to …… volt.

vi) Now by using the values of Vs, Is & Vr, calculate the dimensionless coefficient A and
admittance C.

Dimensionless Coefficient (A) = = Admittance C = 𝑉𝑠 =
𝑉𝑅 𝑅

2) Short Circuit the Output Terminal Procedure:

i) Short line connection remains same, just short output terminal.
ii) Measure the sending end current (Is), receiving end current (IR) and receiving end
voltage (VR) respectively with the help of Switch S1, S2, and S3.
iii) After completion of the entire connection, connect the main cord to the panel &
switch on the power supply.
iv) With the help of variac adjust the voltage up to … volt.
v) In short circuit test, Vs, Is, IR values and the values of VR is zero because output
terminal is short circuited.
vi) By using these values find short transmission line Impedance B and Dimensionless
Coefficient D.

Impedance (B) = = Dimensionless Coefficient (D) = =

Post Lab:
1. Derive the medium transmission line with end condenser method, check whether the
medium transmission line model is symmetrical and reciprocal?
2. Derive the medium transmission line with nominal π method, check whether the
medium transmission line model is symmetrical and reciprocal?
3. What are the practical challenges in accurately measuring the ABCD parameters, and
how can these be mitigated?
4. How would the ABCD parameters change if the line frequency were increased or
decreased? Provide reasoning.
