Tutorial Sheet 6

This document is a tutorial sheet for the MATH F112 course at the Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani, covering various topics in complex analysis. It includes questions on sets in the complex plane, continuity, differentiability, Cauchy-Riemann equations, harmonic functions, and analytic functions. Each question requires students to analyze functions and their properties in the context of complex variables.

MATH F112 : Mathematics-II
Tutorial Sheet - 6

Topics Covered: Module - 7 and 8

Q 1. Consider the set S = {z ∈ C : |Imz| < |z|}.

(i). Sketch the set.

(ii). Find interior points, exterior points, and boundary points.
(iii). Find its closure.
(iv). (a) Is S an open set? (b) Is S a closed set? (c) Is S a domain?

Q 2. Consider f : C → C defined by

z 2 − 3z − 10i
f (z) = , if z ̸= −(1 + 2i)
z + (1 + 2i)

and f (z) = 0 if z = −(1 + 2i). Find limz→−(1+2i) f (z). Is f continuous at this point?

Q 3. Let f (z) = x2 − x + y + i(y 2 − 5y − x). Determine the points at which f (z) is differentiable and
find f ′ (z) at these points. Further, examine the analyticity of the function f (z).

Q 4. Consider the function f (z) = u + iv, where

(
x3 (1+i)−y 3 (1−i)
x2 +y 2
, ̸ 0
z=
f (z) =
0, z=0

(i). Examine whether Cauchy-Riemann equations are satisfied at origin.

(ii). Examine the differentiability of f at z = 0.

Q 5. Show that f (z) = |Re z Im z| satisfies Cauchy-Riemann equations at the origin, but is not differ-
entiable at this point.

Q 6. Does there exist an analytic function on the complex plane whose real part is given by

u(x, y) = 3x2 + xy + y 2 ?

Q 7. Show that u = e−2xy cos(x2 −y 2 ) is harmonic in R2 . Find its harmonic conjugate v(x, y) in R2 . Write
f (z) = u + iv as a function of z with f (0) = 1.

Q 8. Suppose f (z) = u + iv is entire such that ux + vy = 0 forall x, y ∈ R. Show that f has the form
f (z) = az + b where a, b are some complex constant with Re(a) = 0.
